The Daily Grind: Did you try out any MMO rogue servers in 2020?

Last year was the year when rogue servers became an even bigger deal for many veteran MMO players than usual, due in no small part to the out-in-the-open rogue servers for City of Heroes that started as a point of contention before becoming a weirdly heartwarming story for everyone. This year, meanwhile, we’ve all been stuck at home and with plenty of time to try out new servers for old favorites or just out of curiosity (if you don’t understand why, welcome to 2020, you missed a lot so far).

All of this raises the obvious question: Did you try out any MMO rogue servers this year?

The advantage to doing so is that it’s a chance to play a no-longer-available game, often with changes from the original that can result in a very different overall experience. The downside, of course, is that these servers may or may not be tacitly accepted by the people who own the rights and may be subject to shutdowns or at least internal drama. So did you try any, or did you stick with official servers this year?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Nah. I don’t do rogue servers. Oh, there are may reasons, but in this context it is a preference.

Still logging in daily to City of Heroes, and occasionally dabbling a bit in Warhammer Reckoning.

WoW stuff that I’d have stuck around with if I had IRL friends with me. Still some on my radar.

Yes, played Warhammer and loved it. Tried CoX but never understood the appeal of that game. Played SWG and remembered how awful the engine is. Just jump once and you’ll see what I mean. Played Vanguard too and it’s just lost something over time. So my vote for best rogue server goes to WAR:RoR server. I do want to play Project Ascension but I’m scared it will taint my view of WoW forever lol.

Do the actual LOTRO servers count given their stability?

Not in 2020. Why? Do you have any you want to recommend?

Come to think of it, another good daily grind question would be “are there any rogue servers you are waiting to see happen?”.

Went back to RoR like I do every year, same as Project Ascension. Had a blast with the seasonal TBC prepatch event for Project Ascension. Might give Homecoming another go because of how often Bree talks about it on the podcast, I just can’t get into the gameplay of CoX at all.
