The Daily Grind: Do you follow Discord servers for specific MMOs?

we's friemds

On some level this might be a case of an old man yelling at clouds, but I really dislike joining Discord servers for specific MMOs. I have no problem joining Discord servers for communities within games, naturally, but joining an entire server just to see such basic things as news and updates makes my eye twitch. Get a dang website! No, Facebook does not count! If you’re trying to convince me that your studio can actually run a functional MMO, running a functional website is, like, step zero!

However, that might just be me. Or maybe it’s something everyone hates and we can all be angry at the people making official Discord servers for games as a rule. So do you like having Discord servers for specific MMOs that you need to trawl through for relevant information about the game? Or does just the thought of that irritate you, much less the reality of several smaller games that actually do that?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

No.. discord isnt a webpage.

The only time i join an mmo’s discord, is when im beta testing and they ask us to use it to report bugs and other similar things.

Aside om FF and WoW, what else is out there with a large enough following to warrant hanging in discord? New World? Ashes of Creation looks promising, so ahh, maybe them>?

I think I’m the only one that does not like discord. I’m a forums guy.

I use discord regularly so it’s really convinient, esp with the channel follow feature and tweetshift bit- I can just poke my head in, grab a channel with news to follow, and redirect the news to my resource server. I never chat with the communities in them, tho- I either leave the server, or I just mute it and stash it away. For games without servers I just use tweetshift to post updates from games twitters to that same server.

Depends. I’ll join official, or the most official unofficial discords for news updates, research purposes, or screenshots. Some I join for the intent of the above but if they’re missing any of the above, they stay tucked in a corner of my Discord. It’s not a platform I use to meet and find people to play with as I’ve had too many… iffy experiences and I avoid Discord interaction with strangers.

I use it for smaller MMOs and pservers. I hate it. It’s a necessity tool. It’s awful to look for guides, it’s badly organized, it’s a hellhole of opinions, it’s pain to search old content.

Look, i get that forums have problems, but cranking said problems up to 11 while fostering chaotic talks is NOT how you solve them.

Yeah, this definitely came up recently, in the context of Palia’s unusually friendly Discord. I joined it, but left in under a week.

I’ll say again what I said then: a Discord with more than 20-50 regular users is like walking into a crowded room where everyone’s yelling over each other, trying to have their own conversation. It’s constant noise and chaos – not a place you can have a constructive discussion.

Give me forums to browse, where every individual conversation topic is nicely threaded. Give me a news front page where I can find official statements quickly. Not a 24/7 text riot.

Didn’t this topic come up once before? I don’t use Discord, and won’t use Discord. And yes, I’m pretty sure I remember being insulted by other posters because I don’t use it the last time this came up.

So yes, it annoys me a bit. Since I don’t have Discord, I have the impression that I can’t even *see* anything from a game that uses it as their sole form of public interaction. But I’m just one person, and even in Warframe my opinion is worth about one 30 millionth of nothing. (Warframe has “over 30 million registered users.” It’s also the only game where I’m even slightly active on their forums, or making ongoing purchases.)
