The Daily Grind: What are the dumbest arguments in the MMO genre?

I saw a quote on Twitter a while back that really resonated with me:

“Hell is aging and growing older but having to hear the same dumb arguments each time a new video game is announced.”

I know I’ve been doing this a long time and playing in the genre longer, but if I never have to hear another argument about gank PvP, pay-to-win, mobile MMOs, or politics in gaming, it’ll be too soon. It’s just exhausting to have to keep explaining the same thing over and over for years and years.

What are the dumbest arguments in the MMO genre?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Hardcore VS Casual

If you don’t like a certain system in a game then you are a ‘filthy casual who would like it if only they tried it’.

Dumb argument: “MMO stands for Mandatory Multiplayer Only. If you don’t want to team for everything, GTFO.”

Dumber argument: “If you want to be by yourself, GTFO and play a single player game. God, I hate that devs listen to useless casuals like you.”

I take a certain pride in having single-handedly destroyed gaming for people like that by just kicking back and having fun. Hope I give them ulcers.

I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw a discussion of P2W that didn’t make me nearly go blind from rolling my eyes.

If internet arguments have taught me anything, it’s that literally everything is P2W.

What are the dumbest arguments in the MMO genre

The most dumb argument: “there is only one right way to play MMORPG, the way I play it, and developers should absolutely never try to satisfy preferences of people who don’t enjoy doing what I am doing by giving them an option to do different things and do same things in a different ways in the same game”. Be it either PvE, optional cosmetics store with optional XP boosts and optional instant level skip items, PvP or any other aspect of the gameplay including things like dungeon queue tool or fast travel or ability to complete every in-game instanced content solo – you will always find simple-minded, selfish idiots trying to argue that something should not exist because they don’t like it and instead everybody must be forced to do things that those selfish idiots like doing or can afford doing in terms of time required to do them.

The “freedom of choice” Illusion of stat building/talent point allocation.

Also, ‘open world pvp is balanced’ illusion

It’s pay to win. So sick of hearing this.

The definition of ‘casual’ vs….whatever isn’t.

Plenty of arguments that certainly seem dumb.

However, the vast majority of arguments I see are simply gamers expressing their preferences and wishing for more content to satisfy their preferences, but with an almost complete lack of understanding as to why they even have those preferences combined with an inability to express themselves.

All of which is made worse by the fact that the video games industry is still relatively young and hasn’t developed a proper technical lexicon. This just makes the whole problem of effective communication even harder.
