Seamless. Very convincing.

At the end of December, we dished out our award for the best MMO trend of the year. Now, it’s time to pinpoint the worst. And you know what, this one is usually much easier to pick.

Initially, I thought I’d be nominating the metaverse here. I’m not saying I don’t want a metaverse or that it’s impossible, just that it blew up as the techbro buzzword of the year and now literally every grifter is out there trying to hawk it, and thanks I hate it. But then, especially in December, a whole bunch of companies decided to jump on the crypto train and insist that MMOs needed NFTs for completely unconvincing and obviously self-serving reasons. The worst ones are the ones that do both! I honestly can’t wait until they move on to their next scam and leave the business of actually building the holodeck to the actual developers who were doing it already.

What would you say was the worst MMO trend of 2021?
