When it comes to any MMO battle with mechanics more complex than, “There’s a guy over there so go perform violence upon that guy,” there are two schools of thought. One group of people really finds it most interesting to learn what the mechanics are, to go in blind and figure out how to win the fight through cleverness and recognizing how various mechanics work. The most interesting fights are the first few, when the fight is still a new thing.
The second group, however, sees the learning as being tedious at best and downright annoying at worst. The challenge isn’t figuring out what the boss does; it’s executing the fights, finding the optimal times to do things and the best way to mitigate or avoid damage. In other words, the most interesting fights are when you know the mechanics and can execute them with no small level of skill.
Which seems more fun to you? Are you more into the time when you’re learning a new fight and figuring how how it works? Or are you more interested in being able to execute the fights well and find the learning to be more of a step to the fun part than the fun part in and of itself?
