The Daily Grind: Will you try Swords of Legends Online out as a free-to-play title?

S-words.

There was a time when launching as a free-to-play title seemed like an ambitious reach for a new MMO, but at this point it’s actually a safer move than even buy-to-play. Case in point: Swords of Legends Online is moving over to a free-to-play model at some point in February, after launching with a buy-to-play model. Of course, this is accompanied by all the usual empty promises about no pay-to-win and so forth, but I’m honestly more interesting in the announcement itself and what the change might mean for the population.

Obviously, removing the buy-in means that more people can jump in and see if the game is for them without worrying about what happens if you buy and don’t like the game. On the other hand, we’re also not exactly lacking for games in the MMO space at this point, and the lack of buy-in isn’t necessarily because of lack of money but potential lack of interest to begin with. So will you try SOLO out when it goes free-to-play?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
