The Daily Grind: What’s the best approach for player flying in MMOs?

Flying in MMOs is far less controversial these days than it used to be a decade or so ago, with many titles sporting some way to slip the surly bonds of earth and soar among the eagles (which, it should be said, have fantastic loot tables).

But not all flight systems are equally designed. Some MMOs prefer a gliding approach, some offer slightly more realistic physics and turning, some let you move about in the air as easily as running, and some eschew flight altogether. We’ve even seen select titles create more involved flying systems with customization and power-ups.

And then there’s the question of when and how players should be able to unlock flying in the game itself. Should it be universal? Done on a zone-by-zone basis? Be gated behind content or achievement unlocks?

What’s the best approach for player flying in MMOs, do you think? And have we already seen such an approach in a current game?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
