Lately I’ve been listening through a Lord of the Rings Online YouTube series in which the game’s lead world builder goes zone by zone to share a lot of the behind-the-scenes information about how the actual landscape, art, and NPCs were created. I dig this sort of tour because it opens my eyes to the hard work and artistic skill that goes into the MMOs we take for granted all the time.
But while I like to know “how the sausage is made,” so to speak, I can imagine others don’t. It might well ruin the immersion to realize how everything is, in truth, a flimsy facade of patched-together assets and illusions.
Do you like knowing how your MMO is made, even if what you learn can’t be un-learned? Does it spoil the experience for you?
