The Daily Grind: What’s the wildest thing you’ve done just to get an achievement in an MMO?

And again.

Who doesn’t love achievements? It’s fun being able to tick off the box for doing something difficult or at least non-trivial and show off to everyone that you accomplished it. But it’s also clear that achievements aren’t the same as other content in an MMO; there’s minimal fanfare when you get one, just a little acknowledgement that you earned the achievement. Maybe you’ll get a corresponding reward like a title or a pet, but you will not be treated to an elaborate cinematic and a slow-focus pan of your character or something.

But still, some of us go to elaborate lengths to get achievements. Staying up late, mapping things on spreadsheets, perfecting timing, re-running the same fight time and again, all in the name of getting a very small acknowledgement that probably doesn’t matter all that much in the grand scheme of things. So what’s the furthest length you’ve gone to just to get an achievement in an MMO? What’s the extent of your effort for a reward that is, ultimately, kind of small and fleeting?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
