The Daily Grind: Should global chat be restricted to discussion of just that MMO?

The megaphone that is the world chat or global chat channel is a huge responsibility that few people seem to respect. Any player can spew random thoughts to thousands of others in an instant, and more often than not, that thought is completely unconnected to the game in which everyone’s playing.

I get quite irked at a hijacked global chat channel that ends up being used for awkward, offensive, or irrelevant topics, not to mention various rants on other MMORPGs. It’s all that more egregious when you see someone pipe up with a game-relevant question only to be ignored because everyone’s talking about the rising cost of blueberry pies on the grocery shelves or whatever.

So I ask this question both seriously and a bit tongue-in-cheek: Should global chatter be restricted to only that game in question? I know that it’s not something that could be enforced, but if it could, should this be the case? Is it time to jettison the memes, trolls, and various narcissists who want attention?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
