The Daily Grind: How much preparation are you willing to do for MMO combat?

It was Lord of the Rings Online’s traps that made me ponder this question. I remember playing LOTRO years ago when traps were part and parcel of the Hunter’s kit (and a physical crafted item, if I recall right?). But now traps are tucked away within a spec line, one I haven’t tinkered much with because… well, I know myself, and I know that I probably won’t bother with laying traps before every fight. And even if I did, the chance that it wouldn’t last long enough to be worth the effort… yeah, I probably just won’t when I’m soloing – even though I absolutely love the idea of traps and have certainly deployed them to great effect in other MMOs.

In fact, I love the idea of a lot of combat prep – the physical stuff especially. Potions and bandages and food and shield spikes and arrow oils and all of that… gimmie. I really like turrets too – turret classes being a fond favorite of mine. And yet, it’s still kind of annoying prepping for every single fight.

How much preparation are you willing to do for MMO combat? Do you limit it to consumables you might have to use only once every half hour, or do you actively seek out MMO classes that require you to undertake specific actions ahead of every single fight?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
