At first blush, the announcement that’s the source for this story looks like a corporate word salad bar, but once you cut through all of the fat, there is some news hiding within that falls into our wheelhouse: A recently formed Finnish game studio called Social First has nailed down $4.2M in seed funding in order to develop “a cross-platform social MMO.”

Social First is a studio spearheaded by CEO Kim Soares and company president Mikko Kähärä, both of whom claim over 20 years’ experience in game development and marketing respectively. The goal of the studio and its new title is to “redefine social gaming” by creating a game that leans into creating a social platform, which Soares argues is already happening, especially among younger gamers.

“We are not just developing a social game, we are creating a game that is also going to be the most important social platform for millions of players, where they can create meaningful relationships.”

This investment will help to accelerate the unnamed MMO’s development, which reportedly has already been through successful early playstesting with thousands of players. More information on what this game actually is hasn’t been divulged, but it is eyeing an early access launch later this year.
