The Daily Grind: Would you rather an MMO be over or underpopulated?

I was hanging out in Lord of the Rings Online this past weekend and saw an interesting conversation: While some folks are lamenting the long transfer lines, others are already raising concerns that the servers, or at least Glamdring, might already be too full. Clearly, when smooshing a whole bunch of servers into just four, we were always going to have a lot more people around. That was one of the goals, after all!

But I’ve been in some very middling zones that are seeing lag and warnings about layered populations and overcrowding. I never expected to see those warnings in places like Evendim, where I’ve been leveling my Champion.

I’m hoping the population settles down a bit after the hype dies down, and I do love seeing lots of people in a thriving game. But I’m also a little worried that it could be tooooo crowded and I picked the wrong server.

Would you rather an MMO be over or underpopulated, assuming there’s no possibility of a goldilocks server?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
