Here’s a shocker, Blizzard’s making a lot of money! Of course, the company’s second quarter 2015 financial results go into a bit more detail than that, but if you’re in a hurry that’s the long and short of it.
The company posted “better-than-expected” numbers despite World of Warcraft subscriptions dropping to 5.6 million. Blizzard says that Fury of Hellfire “helped stabilize the subscriber number towards the end of the quarter.” The firm went on to blame the sub drop on the eastern market. For reference, WoW stood at 10 million subs during Q4 2014 and 7.1 million during Q1 2015.
For the quarter ending June 30, 2015, Acti-Blizz’s GAAP net revenues were $1.04 billion as compared with $970 million for the second quarter of 2014. Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm, and Destiny now have a combined 70 million registered players and over $1.25 billion in non-GAAP revenues to date. “Key engagement metrics, which were already very strong, nearly doubled year over year, largely on account of the new content and new platforms,” Blizzard says regarding Hearthstone.
The company also touts Diablo III, saying that it “has now sold-through over 30 million units life-to-date globally.”
