On the one hand, the staff running the Phantasy Star Online 2 community right now are doing everything right. Responses on social media are swift. Energy is high. Communication is clear and adequate. Except that the big question people keep asking about (the PC version) is not just met with silence but generally complete ignorance. It’s a weird state wherein the team is doing a very good job of communicating on one level, but a terrible job on another.
They’re not alone, of course. Guild Wars 2 has absolute blockbuster trailers and press releases, but players tend to have no idea of the shape of what’s coming next for the game, overall content cadence, or even major staffing changes. World of Warcraft puts out lots of information about the game and the design philosophy, but instead of taking any feedback it feels like the response to players saying “we hate this” is “here’s 4000 words explaining why we’re not changing it.” So which MMOs do a great job and a terrible job of communicating with players?
