If you don’t read much Reddit, you might be unaware that the one most squarely on point with our genre, /r/MMORPG, had a bit of a meltdown this past week. Following a massive flamewar about the quality of the sub in a post titled This subreddit is worthless (over 3000 upvotes as I type this), the users and mods over there had a bit of an existential crisis, leading to a mod post called The Purge, in which the mods announced they had banned 44 users for being persistently toxic and planned to patrol the halls a bit more vigilantly going forward.
“These individuals represented the worst of the worst, and we’re done putting up with that kind of toxic behaviour,” one mod wrote. “I get that recent years have turned many of you into bitter, jaded husks that chase their next MMO like a drug addict chases their next heroin fix. But it is not acceptable to use that jaded bitterness as a weapon against each other, nor is it acceptable to berate someone for their choice of game they play.”
We’re certainly wishing the moderating team plenty of luck with that venture and will be watching closely and rooting for them, just as we did the last time this happened, both for their own sake and (more selfishly) for mine, since I read at least the titles of everything that gets posted over there!
But in the meantime, we’re curious about which other MMO-related boards you read on Reddit. Obviously, the small group of now-banned trolls on that sub didn’t ever represent the majority of the MMO industry that is busy playing and reading and streaming and actually having fun instead of posting rants about how we’ve not gotten any relevant MMOs in two decades (what?). If you weren’t on that sub, what subs – related to MMOs, mind you – do you frequent? Does the community on those subs make or break them?
