The Daily Grind: Is it time for a Wheel of Time MMORPG?

Last night, Amazon finally debuted its Wheel of Time TV series, based on Robert Jordan’s sprawling franchise of the same name that began back in 1990. And that makes today the perfect time to ask why the heck we still don’t have an MMO set in this world!

I’m cheating a tiny bit here because I actually asked a similar question exactly three years ago, when the adaptation was just getting underway and the buzz had just begun. At the time, I expressed reservations about some of the more cringe stuff in the books, the stuff that made me trail off reading them many years ago, even before Jordan died and the franchise passed to a new writer to finish up. But chatting with my guildies about the show all over again (one of them got to see the fan premiere earlier this week!) has reminded me just how fun it was as a kid to discuss all the theories as the books were coming out one by one. I really wouldn’t mind tugging a few braids in that world. In fact, I’ve kind of done it; years after I started playing MMOs, I actually played a Wheel of Time MUD for a bit, which I suppose isn’t the normal order for these things, but those were my only options – and still are.

Is it time for a Wheel of Time MMORPG? Would you play it?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
