Sea of Thieves’ latest patch deploys new tech for better performance, adjusts voyages, rep, and rewards

Sea of Thieves is now operating on a new Xbox game developer kit (GDK) as of its most recent patch. That might sound kind of boring on the face of it, but as the release notes point out, this should bring some overall performance boons for the seafaring sandbox, especially on the PC side of things.

This GDK update now lets SOT support both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, with the game detecting and optimizing itself appropriately based on player hardware, though players can still manually switch in the options of they choose. The update also promises general client improvements, and while the patch’s file size is larger than usual for console and Microsoft Store user, later patches should be “considerably smaller” going forward.

GDK-based improvements aren’t the only things on deck with the patch, as it also brings on shorter lengths for the voyage of legends and ashen voyage of legends, reward improvements for a wide assortment of existing voyage types, tweaks to the Skull of Sirens Song reputation earnings, and full access to the most recent tall tales. Overall this patch is part backend improvement and part gameplay adjustment.
