Prices and probabilities for Once Human’s latest lockbox ‘event’ prompt calls for a player boycott

Last week saw survival shooter Once Human put forth its latest update, which Starry Studio said was chiefly focused on the addition of a faction vs. facton PvP server. However, the addition of a so-called event centered around a limited-time lockbox is raising a lot of players’ hackles.

The center of players’ ire is the Lightforge Celebration Crate, which has a chance at a variety of cyberpunk neon cosmetics including weapon skins, extremely loud outfits, and one very splashy car skin, along with a limited currency known as lightforge crystals that come in three variants and can be used to select a specific reward.

However, by Starry’s own admission, the chance of getting some of the more desirable rewards, like the crystal that lets players select the car skin, is 0.06%, while opening 30 such crates guarantees at least one type of these crystals. Furthermore, these crates can be opened only using a specific key known as a lightforge ingot, which can be bought only with cash shop currency. All of this adds up: Most players are concluding that getting the car skin will run between $500 and $600 worth of spending on lockboxes.

The eye-watering price, FOMO nature of this “event,” and intensely low chance at getting items has rankled players of the game, with many tearing in to the studio on Twitter and some players calling for a spending boycott on Reddit, which is going about as well as you would expect.

Meanwhile, Once Human now has an in-game feedback platform that will let players submit their thoughts on game matters to be gathered by the devs. Which seems like the perfect place for players to direct their rage about this monetization nonsense, among other complaints revolving around lag, bugs, and frustration with signing up for the PvP scenario.
