343 Industries rebrands to Halo Studios for ‘new games’ and UE5 switch

What’s in a name? Well if you ask Halo fans and mention the name of 343 Industries, you might get a curled lip in response as they might recall the fumbled ball of Halo Infinite among other things. The studio behind the FPS isn’t completely throwing in the towel on the franchise, however, as it has revealed a new studio name and the promise of new focus.

The major headlines here are the company’s rebrand to Halo Studios and its switch from the proprietary Slipstream Engine to Unreal Engine 5 for the creation of its new game. Execs in the studio talk up how UE5 is capable of things that the 25 year-old original engine isn’t, confirm “changes in culture, workflow, and how [the] teams are organized,” and highlight the formation of a mock game codenamed Project Foundry that has helped the developers come to grips with the new engine and what it means for the Halo series moving forward.

The post is quick to point out that a new Halo isn’t imminent and Infinite will still receive updates to operations and forge mode in the near future, but there are multiple games in the series cooking right now. Details are otherwise thin, but that’s by design, as the devs want to “get away from […] the continued teasing out of possibilities and ‘must-haves’” and design towards “the level of humility [and] the level of servitude towards Halo fans.”
