By now we’re all pretty familiar with the option to log in to alternate platforms and websites through accounts like Google, Steam, and Facebook, but a class action lawsuit filed this past weekend is alleging that Ubisoft’s digital store shared personal information with Facebook company Meta when buyers used their Facebook account to log in.
The suit was filed by two US-based players on behalf of “themselves and all others similarly situated.” It claims that personal identifying information (PII) when using the Ubisoft Store with a Facebook login is captured by a tracker installed by Meta and used by Ubisoft, which is then sent to Facebook. The plaintiffs argue this practice exposes PII “to any person of ordinary technical skill who received that data” and violates the Video Privacy Protection Act.
“This threat of injury to plaintiffs from the continuous violations requires temporary, preliminary, and permanent injunctive relief to ensure their PII is protected from future disclosure without adequate notice and consent,” the suit argues.
Restitution sought by the suit includes statutory damages, attorney fees, and $2,500 to the original plaintiffs and any others who join in on the class action suit.
