This year isn’t even over yet, but Lord of the Rings Online’s world design team is already looking ahead to the first update of 2025. The developers said that this drop will be a quality-of-life update, and as part of that, the studio has plans to visually overhaul some of its older and less appealing dungeons.
That’s where a new poll comes into play: “We know we have a TON of dungeon spaces from across our game that could use a facelift to bring them to our modern standards of design,” Standing Stone Games says. “So many, in fact, that deciding which ones to update is a somewhat daunting task. So we wanted to reach out to you all and see what dungeon spaces you’d most like to see get a visual update!”
Ten dungeons from the very earliest regions in the game are part of this poll. Standing Stone Games said that the top three that receive the most votes will get the makeover treatment.
The studio indicated that this is a “pilot” program that could be expanded in the future, saying, “Part of the purpose of not revising the ‘capstone’ instance spaces is the complexity involved in those spaces. We want to pilot this effort and see how things turn out before we turn our eyes towards those spaces — which would require a much bigger effort and more extensive QA time. Start small, see how things go, and consider other more complex spaces in the future.”
Oh, and here’s a tease for a future landscape expansion: “The South Farthing is the last remaining portion of the Shire to be built, and we’ll get there precisely when we mean to.”
