Meet the World of Warcraft hardcore mode guild that turns its gameplay into a roleplayed soap opera

Many of the staff here at MOP grew up in a very special age of soap operas, with shows like Melrose Place, Guiding Light, and Beverly Hills 90210 making huge waves across TV. However, the soap opera – or at least some of the overblown high drama of that venerable television genre – has evolved into the digital age thanks to a massive roleplaying guild found within World of Warcraft’s hardcore mode.

Meet OnlyFangs, a guild formed by OTK co-creator Sodapoppin that features over 100 of Twitch’s biggest streamers, all of whom have created hardcore characters and play the game the way their characters would, effectively roleplaying their way through the MMORPG as they head for level 60 and its high-level challenges like Molten Core. Some of OnlyFangs’ members have taken their RP to impressive levels, including one streamer donning an accent for their character and another wearing a cow head mask when playing their Tauren.

The soap opera-level drama involves plenty of moments such as one member being executed for cheesing inventory management in an inter-guild PvP brawl, an event that sowed divisions within some members in-character and out-of-character. The whole affair has already started its second “season,” and while the roleplay is definitely not at a level that more serious RPers would find palatable – the whole thing is covered in Twitch cartoon character reactionary behavior – it’s certainly fuel for the kind of dumb drama that soaps are all about.
