Make My MMO: Refunds for Hero’s Song (January 7, 2017)

This week in MMO crowdfunding news, refunds continue for Hero’s Song, which was canceled the day after Christmas with the promise to reimburse all those who backed the game through Indiegogo or on Steam early access. A new Indiegogo announcement from John Smedley yesterday says that Pixelmage has finished processing all pending requests — manually — and will soon begin mailing checks. “On the PayPal front we’re awaiting having our PayPal account authorized to do this,” he writes, suggesting that will be resolved early next week.

Meanwhile, take note, future MMO devs: If our readers are any indication, Kickstarter is probably not going to be your ticket to cash in 2017.

Betawatch: Crowfall claims 2017 (January 6, 2017)

Here we are, in 2017! It seems a lot like 2016 and things are still kind of awful. On the bright side, David Bowie hasn’t died again. Also, Crowfall has proudly proclaimed that this will be its year. So far, the year has consisted of answering player questions and passing a crowdfunding goal, but it probably will include more than that. The year is young.

Other beta news? Yes, there’s been a little bit while developers get back from the holidays.

Of course, there’s a list down below. Same list as last year, really, we haven’t had enough time for any huge shakeups. If something is on there which ought not to be, though, please do let us know down in the comments.

Origins of Malu proclaims ‘we are not dead,’ downgrades from an MMORPG

Last April, we reported that the indie MMO Origins of Malu was suspending development as it sought investors to help fund the project. Since then, there has been movement on the game, although it still appears that the team is small, underfunded, and struggling to deliver its vision.

Let’s get this out in the open: Origins of Malu’s future as an MMO is still on hold, as the team has decided to focus its efforts on creating a “unique” battleground experience for the early access title. The game is sticking with the Unreal Engine 4 and is holding off on making it purchasable again until the full plans for future development are revealed. A small late-December patch created a new login screen and user management system.

“It’s been painful road, folks, but we are not dead and going forward I will do my best to update you every Wednesday,” the project’s leader reported.

Massively OP’s guide to the best upcoming indie MMORPGs, part three

Over the last couple of weeks, we shared with you part one and part two of our guide to the best upcoming and current indie MMORPGs on the market. Naturally, there were always those titles that we overlooked or couldn’t fit into the space, so we are back with the third and final part of this guide to make sure that all of your favorite games got mentioned.

As a side note, we won’t be covering most of the survival sandbox and mere multiplayer titles, as that would be too much for the scope of this guide. And if you’re interested in these games, then you’ll definitely want to track our Make My MMO and Betawatch columns.

On with part three!

Make My MMO: Camelot Unchained’s beta delay (April 23, 2016)

This week in MMO crowdfunding news, Camelot Unchained’s devs revealed that they will not make their planned target for beta. The beta phase has been postponed while the game’s ability code is refactored to properly handle what the design team is throwing at it.

Meanwhile, Fragmented dropped its NDA and prepped for its early access launch next week, Star Citizen invoked “minimal viable product” verbiage, and Origins of Malu put its development on hold indefinitely while it attempts to secure other funding.

Exclusive: Origins of Malu suspends development, seeks investors

These are the days when your job isn’t much fun: When you report sad news in the MMOverse. Today’s unhappy announcement is that the sandbox Origins of Malu is suspending all development indefinitely. I’ve personally been following, reporting on, and streaming Origins of Malu since my first interview with devs in 2011, and it’s been quite a roller-coaster ride since then. Those who rooted for the game have followed it through three different engines, changes in developers, delays, a name change, and Steam Early Access as a battleground. There was much promise in that world.

The good news is that all is not lost! You might have noticed that I did not say that OoM was canceled or shutting down; I only said that development was suspended. There is still hope on the horizon that the game will be completed. What is necessary for the wheel of development to start turning again is the introduction of an investor into the mix. The reality is that Burning Dog Media simply cannot continue to self-finance the endeavor out of the developers’ own pockets.

I sat down with Michael Dunham, senior producer and studio founder, in this exclusive interview to talk about what happens now, the future plans for Origins of Malu, and other projects the studio has in the works.

Origins of Malu is launching in stages early this year

Wondering whatever happened to Origins of Malu? Apparently the devs were working elsewhere for a while but have now turned their attention back to the title. A new post on Steam revealed that the game will be launching “in stages” over the next few months as a free-to-play MMO.

“We will drop the price of our early access when we have things sorted out,” the team said, “so until then the folks who bought early will get a special treat and some nice rewards. We will announce these soon we are just finalizing some details and to be very honest we have been setting things up and getting the machine in a proper state. Long story short, give a week or two and things should be running smoothly and we can get back to features on the MMO.”

The post also addressed the status of the mobile game and promised new forums soon. Burning Dog said that it’s continuing to look for investors but has vowed to move forward with the launch no matter what.

Factions: Origins of Malu’s early access launch and interview

Origins of Malu has certainly had a long, bumpy road to launch. Showing up on our radar back in August 2011, this title has weathered two engine changes (each necessitating starting over), unsuccessful cowdfunding ventures, and even a name change as the design changed to offer the battlegrounds first. And this past Friday, at the very last minute, the team learned that the launch would be further delayed because of something beyond its control on Steam’s end. But that’s behind the game now, and the first iteration of the game with battlegrounds is live today.

Throughout the whole process, the team has been dedicated to bringing this game to life, going so far as to keep funding it out of pocket throughout the journey. We sat down with founder Michael Dunham to talk about why the additional wait was needed, what players can expect now, and when the full MMO is coming out.

Betawatch: March 20, 2015

H1Z1 this week announced and then canceled plans to charge a monthly pass for its battle royale mode; it’s still happening, Smed says, but not soon — after all, the game’s still in alpha. Daybreak also laid out its roadmap for the game’s coming year. What else is new in the land of MMO testing?

Our complete list of MMOs in testing is below.

Origins of Malu begins early access on March 20th with PvP only

Origins of Malu will be launching its early access program this Friday, March 20th, with a buy-to-play hybrid model. The indie sandbox will initially limit its access to the game’s PvP battleground, although the alpha will expand into MMO territory “approximately a month” later.

The initial release will include five characters and two battleground modes. The team is hoping to have the next update out on April 3rd; it will include additional spells, more character customization, character persistence, achievements, loot, and an inventory system.
