Camelot Unchained announces early 2016 beta test

Camelot Unchained looks to be moving into beta testing in early 2016.

In a livestream yesterday, City State Entertainment revealed that the beta should kick off before the end of this winter. The studio also said that all plans are subject to change in the interest of making the best game possible: “We will not rush nor cheapen beta by cutting out features, or having a lackluster beta simply for the sake of getting into beta.”

The team also revealed the first class trio based on player voting, which was a healer/mage hybrid called The Devout. The Devout will be divided into three flavors, one for each faction: Abbot (Arthurians), HelBound (Vikings), and Blessed Crow (Tuatha Dé Danann).

You can watch the beta reveal livestream after the break.

I have become a stoic when it comes to MMOG.

All things considered, beta in “early” 2016 means July at best. Delay, delay, setback. I am still happy to hear they are even talking about it to be honest

It is not easy  waiting for a game to be made. Not with my extensive history of endless(and I mean E N D L E S S ) disappoints ,and feelings of being misled(that is a kind word for being lied to….repeatedly) etc.
Camelot Unchained remains  the only mmog I am interested  in at this time. When the game goes into beta …i will check it out and hopefully donate and jump in.
Til then..it’s THE WITCHER 3 and discovering some new passions in the real world.

(DAOC was the only game that held me,and that was for over a decade)

Mark Jacobs Foggye Kithred Well, the only reason for skipping betas is that I really suck at them. I usually end up wandering aimlessly and just oogling at things while not really doing a whole lot to try and break the game. Of course I may take a sneak peek, and I probably will because I just have to, but I’m not sure how much it really brings to the table.

Thank you kindly for solving the payment method “issue”. It wasn’t a dealbreaker by any means, but is an extra curve on the road for people who are used to just putting in the credit card info and go. Now I have a PayPal account so it seems even less of a problem, so hmm… but you know how people are. Have to find something to bitch about.

Mark Jacobs palejens I understand, and I have massive respect for the job you are undertaking. I will check the game out. Who knows, it might just be the game that gets me into a more PvP-centric mindset?

MrFester We showed the game live, down at Dragon Con. Plus, the Dragon Con video had the latest build (then) footage in it. :)

More coming in the next month.

MrFester I would not be surprised to see another live gameplay stream before the game enters beta. Maybe a Christmas special.

Would be nice to see the state of the game development ( footage ) now in video format and not lip service.

palejens Thanks! Maybe a future game of ours will interest you more. I love PvE as well and I wish I could have said that we could make a great PvE + RvR game on a tight budget but frankly, I couldn’t do that and still look myself in the mirror.

OTOH, by the time Camelot Unchained is LIVE, we will have a full working MMORPG client/server engine so a PvE game, using the same engine, becomes a more realistic possibility. I’ve got a bunch of ideas (or idears in MJ speak according to our Backers) on what we can do to advance the genre and still be fun. :)

Thanks for checking us out, it is appreciated, whether you Backed us or not.

Foggye SallyBowls1 Yeah, so far no complaints about specific release W10 issues. We had a few reports when a couple of our Backers came in on pre-release versions.

Shadanwolf Thanks! I know how you feel. I miss the time I spent in a number of MUDs/MMORPGs. Haven’t found one that feels right in a while.

Thanks for the info. I need pve progression to enjoy a game, but I do admire the effort being put into it.

palejens The game is pretty adamant about not being for everyone.  There really won’t be a lot of PvE elements and certainly no PvE progression (you do not progress by killing wolves, doing quests to kill more wolves, then a scripted dungeon raid to kill the Wolf King.)

Where it may appeal to non combatants is the crafter.  CU will have a dedicated crafting class.  That may appeal to people looking to play the game whom have little internet in PvP.  I’d keep eye for real info on that come early next year.

SallyBowls1  Don’t really believe I’ve seen anyone complain about it not working on Win 10.  Not to mention that there is a lot of optimizations that haven’t even made it yet.

As for the 32 bit client, there are a handful whose client doesn’t work for some reason.  Hopefully with the dxdiags they’ve provided things can be worked out by release.

What are your experience with Alpha and Windows 10?

I tried to install the alpha on a relative new machine got an error 4154 with vcredist_x64.exe. I think you need to install some old versions of DLLs.  Someone in the forums said “CU only has a 32-bit client atm so you may need to install the 32-bit version of VC++.”

Anyway, I am not a big Windows fan, at least as far as drivers/DLLs/registry.  So I don’t want to install some old drivers.

What was your experience with W10 versus CU?

1) Will falling debris hurt players – Yes, that’s the current plan. Now, if we had to sacrifice something on the altar of PhysX. I would give that up if we had to. Now, I don’t think that will be necessary but getting hit by falling rubble is not a must-have. OTOH, falling damage from heights is confirmed as is important.

2) Will we model damage to legs on falling – Yes, I hope so.

3) As to fall damage mitigation – Yes, again, hope so.

Koshelkin Smiggins I appreciate the kind words/praise and all I’ll say in response (and what I’ve said before) is that I hope Chris delivers on a great game. It has become one of the most important games during development in the 30 years I’ve been making games. I really want him to succeed.

DahkohtLewin Thanks! And yeah, no cash shop opening here. And as I talked about in the livestream, when we talk about our Backer Rewards program in detail, that will also answer one question that has been asked for a while. I think our Backers will like that a lot too.

Squive Thanks, I really appreciate the support, especially from those folks, like yourself, who are outside of the US. As to not fleecing our customers or, simply not treating them as “walking wallets”, that’s the way I’ve always done things, even back in my MUD days. Our Backers have given us the chance to make this game and for that, among other reasons, we are doing things the way we have been. You can’t simply wake up one day and say you are going to treat your customers well, nor can you simply say that and expect that people won’t see the difference when you don’t. Yeah, it hurts giving refunds, spending extra time/money to find the perfect vendors for swag (to save on shipping costs for our Backers for example), telling people about our struggles (both personal and hiring), etc. but that’s how I want to be treated when I back crowd-funded projects.

As always, we’re not perfect, but we always try to be. And when we’re not, well, I’m here, there and everywhere telling people why, issuing Mea Culpas, etc.

Thanks again Squive, appreciate the support and kind words, as always.

Foggye Vexia Zunjin As Foggye says, if you feel that way, save the extra money and wait to see what happens. It’s not that I’m against people upping their pledges but, well, part of the plan from the beginning has been to piss people off because of the choices among the various Realms. I’m mean that way. :) There’s plenty of time to make such decisions as we move through all the class reveals. In the meantime, just sit back, watch and let us know what you think. I’m sure not all of our reveals will be as exciting, and there are a few classes that I’m going to do some more work on in the coming weeks, but I’m really happy with almost all of them at this point. The best part is of course, that we still have plenty of time before Beta 1, let alone LIVE, to get them right.

And I really appreciate the kind words and thoughts about upgrading as well.

Foggye Kithred Welcome aboard Kithred! As your points:

1) We are going to look at alternatives to PayPal. We’ve had enough people ask for that, so we are look at seeing what we can do.

2) As to Dark Age, it was a great game, made by a great team. I hope Camelot Unchained is also a great game, I know we already have a great team.

3) As to skipping Betas, no problem with that. We’ll be trying to entice our Backers in joining us more often but, it’s no problem to skip them too.

4) As to subs, yeah, this game is perfect for the sub-based model and we intend to keep it that way. :)

Thanks for joining us, you’re in for a really interesting 9 weeks with all the reveals.

Kithred Welcome to to the community then.  You should pop into the forums and say hi.   My time with the community has brought me more satisfaction then the last 8 years of MMOs.  Also, you’ll get to vote towards the next revealed archetype, that’s a plus.
