Marvel Heroes clamps down on Fantastic Four characters due to licensing issues

Something bizarre and decidedly non-fantastic is going on over at Marvel Heroes. Gazillion made an earth-shattering post on the forums yesterday to say that the company was ceasing sales of Fantastic Four heroes and related costumes as of July 1st due to a new licensing agreement. Players who want to buy them with splinters will have until 5:00 p.m. EDT today to do so.

The licensing restrictions seem mostly concerned with Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Thing, Human Torch, and Silver Surfer, but not Doctor Doom. Many Fantastic Four costumes will be pulled from sale as well, including some for other characters such as Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, and Doctor Doom. Players who have these characters will still be able to play them following the 1st, and they will reportedly still be supported with balance tweaks and so on.

As Fox has owned the movie rights to Fantastic Four for a while now, it stands to reason that the removal of the playable characters and their reduced presence elsewhere in the game is a result of a conflict between Marvel Studios and Fox Studios.

The post and related forum thread has since been yanked for unknown reasons along with a redacted blog post about Xbox One Founders Packs. It hasn’t stopped players from lamenting the oncoming (Sue) storm. You can read the full deleted post below:
