Investors pour $3.7M into MMO sandbox Dual Universe

Dual Universe just snagged a positively massive cash injection. According to a press release posted today, private investors have poured $3.7 million in funding into the sci-fi sandbox MMORPG. That’s in addition to the more than $630,000 the game raised on Kickstarter less than a year ago (a haul that at the time earned the game the title of third most funded video game on Kickstarter that year). Napkin math says the game picked up another $3M in between through on-site fundraising and possibly earlier investment.

Oh, and unlike a lot of games that snap up the “MMO” label, this one actually deserves it.

Dual Universe is a new type of massively-multiplayer online experience: it takes place in a vast Sci-Fi universe, focusing on emergent gameplay and content building, with player-driven in-game economy, politics, trade and warfare. The vision for Dual Universe is to create the first virtual online civilization. At the heart of Dual Universe is a truly innovative proprietary technology, which was developed to lay the foundations of the game. The CSSC (continuous single-shard cluster) manages one single universe with potentially millions of people interacting in it at the same time. A multi-scale voxel engine enables players to physically modify the world; dig a hole, carve up a mountain or build anything they want, from space ships to orbital stations, at any scale they desire. Novaquark is building a virtual world environment where they hope millions of people will be able to live exciting collective adventures within a vibrant and emergent universe where everything is possible. The company aims at creating a new form of entertainment, where participants are free to create their own stories and environment.”

If you follow our crowdfunding column or our Dual Universe feed, you already know that the game’s come a long way since last October, but it’s worth taking a peek at some of the overview videos all the same, especially if No Man’s Sky new stab at co-op has left you wanting.

Any one know how big the game galaxy is? How many stars, how many planets?

There are about 10-20 planets planned for launch, and more will
be added with later expansions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efu_129hI9o&t=31s

The studio also discussed the possibility to generate a huge number of planets procedurally: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1WMwIDWFKI&t=18m37s

Well, I know if you give people the freedom, creative tools, and an audience they will make a giant orbiting space dildo-station the first chance they get. And then murder you while you stand there laughing at it.

I’ve got pretty high hopes for this project. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this game released with top-notch quality and all the features promised during KS in an unusually short development timeline.

They’ve started rebuilding their game on Unigine less than a year and a half ago and the progress they’ve shown is already stunning.

Good for them. I enjoy the dev videos I’ve watched, it seems like they are walking the walk. Will be keeping an eye on this.

They certainly can get rid off those helmets now! ;)

This one is shaping up to be more interesting, to me, than Star Citizen. Just wondering what lengths I will have to go to, to avoid being murdered. If possible.

Sounds good, but unfortunately a bit too good for my skepticism these days. It sounds like “no way in hell are you building a game that does all that on just $3.7 million” good. People like to bash Star Citizen for using faked videos, but I don’t see anything here that can’t be faked. They only had a few players on the screen at one time. No guarantee it wasn’t pre-canned animation. No guarantee there’s any actual net code to support any of it currently. Color me interested, but I’m still not backing this until I see something more concrete like a playable demo.

Oh and yah to me this looks like another open pvp murderbox. Unless proven otherwise I’ll probably pass on that alone.

I don’t think they’ll be restricted to $3.7M in the end. I imagine that they will continue seeking funding from VCs and such because I agree and I’m sure they are aware 3.7M isn’t enough either.

Very cool, hopefully that gives them more breathing room to develop in the way they want to versus in a under the gun taking short cuts sort of way.

sorry to be off topic but I didn’t know how to reach you by PM. We are going to be in TSW Sat. at 11:00pm EST if you want to run HF elite with us or even normal if we only have 3. Brayzen in game.

Oh, I’ll most likely be heading off to bed. Going for a long ride on the motorcycle Sunday. Plus to be honest I really just have no will to log into TSW right now, focused on LoTRO currently.
