Star Citizen helps players find the right spaceship for them

With all of the many spaceships designed (and sold) for Star Citizen so far, it might be a little confusing which might be the best for any particular person or playstyle when one strolls up to the lot and stares at all of the options.

To assist with this selection process, the devs are releasing a 10-part article series revolving around a “new ship matrix” that clearly outlines the purposes and capabilities of each of the vessels available in the game for the upcoming Alpha 3.0. The first of this series separates ships into different careers and then further separates them by roles.

These roles include combat, transport, exploration, industrial, support, and competition (racing). The team went on to explain a few examples from this wide selection, such as going exploring as a pathfinder, hauling human cargo as a passenger transport, or offering tourists a lift as a luxury tour.

“With our new baseline established, going forward we intend to keep the matrix as up-to-date as possible with the latest information,” the team said. “It is our hope that the New Ship Matrix will be the starting point for your Star Citizen theorycrafting adventures, as we detail the stock loadouts each ship will begin with.”

While this specific use case doesn’t seem amazing to me, I do wish that more games did things like this.

There was an old semi-graphical MUD called VR-1: Crossroads that actually gave you a personality quiz when you first loaded up the client. Based on that quiz, it would only allow you to choose one of three different secret societies to be a faction of (out of the 15 or so present in the game). These societies were like built-in guilds, complete with their own unique housing, knowledge of the world, abilities, and goals/win states.

I always thought it was a really cool mechanism both because it was a way for the devs to directly interact with the players and try to guide them to play the game in a manner they would most enjoy, and because it allowed the devs to create a lot of mystery around aspects of the game. You’d run into other secret societies, but you wouldn’t know their goals, their backstories, or even their names. It also, at least in theory, meant that you’d end up playing with a group of people that had similar playstyles and tastes.

Long story short, I don’t think the “find your dream spaceship” series will do too much in that direction, but I think that the overall goal is a laudable one and would love to see devs do something similar more often.

The Secret World did that too before launch, a little survey that would tell you which faction you should probably join.

How bad would it suck to be a “tourist” and have your luxury liner (for which you presumably bought a ticket, or paid a fee to travel on) attacked and destroyed? In Star Wars Galaxies, yachts were exempt from PvP, weren’t armed, and didn’t fight. They were also awesome, fun to decorate inside, and great for entertaining guests and to go on space voyages. I had many fine moments of socializing whilst in orbit over a planet, taking in all that heavenly glory through the large bay windows on the side. I’d like to see that same situation in SC.

Quote Styopa:”A shopping matrix for the capabilities of ships in a game that doesn’t exist”

Which match pretty well the Crowdfunded model for any project type, game or not.

Name a game project that doesn’t add more details while growing up…

2012 Alex is really going to love this, as it will help him make some great choices about what ships to use before he dumps $100 into the game! Side note: is one of those ships a TARDIS? Just because I want this info to have as much utility as possible.

Honestly. How many hundreds of millions needed to be poured into this game before they thought this was a good idea? (It’s not a BAD idea. But if the essence of comedy is timing, this is a bad joke.)

Before I turn off The Snark: what part of a “10-part article series” is supposed to be an “easy” solution to new players finding out what ship is best for them? I know we Geeks n’ Nerds are a dedicated lot when it comes to doing our own research, but reading 10 articles is hardly a practicable short-cut for a new player trying to find out how to play this game.

it is kind of hilarious that they meet the common complaint that the website is a clusterfuck of useless information for newbies with an overly wordie 10 part guide for newbies to sell them on what amount to some of the more expensive ships in teh game.

they need to do a dire balance pass to bring those starter ships up to a base viability level for anything pve or pvp at all first

Reader

Have they indicated if there’s going to be anything for brand new, inexperienced players to do in their Mustangs and Auroras soon? Beyond being fodder for the high priced vets?

deekay_plus
Reader
deekay_plus

idk, the aurora did get a rework for 3.0 so maybe they improved it balance wise with that rework. otherwise the base aurrora is a pile of shit, as is the base reliant and base mustang.

i generally recomend to ppl to spend an extra $10 on the ln/lx upgrades to the aurora for base viability. it makes a world of difference really.

In case you did not realise it Styopa, this is a Backers project because of its Crowdfunded very nature.
If you are eager to play an already finished game, go buy NMS, ED or ME Andromeda. They are an alternative while people around the world are giving themself the opportunity to get the game no Publishers will ever deliver.

agemyth 😩

If all those ships are supposed to be in the 3.0 version currently in the hands of super volunteers, why are a bunch of them still concept art and/or bullshots on that page? If some of those aren’t in the game (3.0) yet, it seems silly to recommend them.

If they keep this updated it should be pretty handy once you can acquire these with in-game currency.

deekay_plus
Reader
deekay_plus

not all of the ships will be in 3.0. 3.0 actually doesn’t add much in the way of new ships, mostly updates of old ones plus ground vehicles.

Reader
FreecczLaw

Will ships only be possible to get via purchasing them for real money? Or is it possible to get different ships via the actual game and playing?

Reader

Hi long time Star Citizen backer here.Made account here just to reply to you here.

.Anyways yes after you buy a starter for 45$ ALL ships on live release can be obtained ingame for free.If you pay 60$ you get both the MMO SC and campaign leading up to MMO part called Squadron 42 a huge open world singel story campaign. Game is pay to play, no subscripsion and will have no DLC or seasonpass etc etc.If you join us i wish you the best o7

Did you know CR said that backers would obviously be upset if expensive real money ships could be earned quickly in game and said they were balancing the system due to that fact?

I could earn the money to buy a Hollywood mansion, in theory.

Reader
TheDonDude

You can rent ships for Arena Commander (the game-within-a-game with swarm mode, racing, and PvP stuff) using in-game currency.

You cannot buy or rent ships for the Mini-Universe yet using in-game currency–only real money. Supposedly in-game currency will be usable in 3.1 or 3.2, but we shall see.

Soo much awesome right there. As an aside it’s about how I feel as well when it comes to every touring motorcycle I get. All you’re missing on that chart is a trade in value for the previous ship. :)

So does this mean there are ships immune to PvP? or is this the “Lusitania” class?

Cyclone Jack

It means that you’ll probably want some friends nearby, just in case, depending on where you go on your tour. And I doubt the touring ships will be completely defenseless. The 890 Jump, for example, has a point defense system, turrets, and a small hangar.

Reader
Melissa McDonald

Yeah… no. If I wanted to do tours that are under risk of attack, I’d be doing safaris in some lawless African warlord savannah.

Cyclone Jack
Reader

It depends on where you want to tour. You can’t expect to tour a highly contested, pirate-infested region of space and not get shot at. At the same time, I would be surprised if one got attacked while in a high security system.

While I agree that getting shot at while touring a few passengers is going to be more than a little annoying, I’ve still got my eye on the 890 Jump. I’m curious to see how that ship plays, how touring plays, and what options they have for surviving and getting out of combat.
