The Stream Team: Xsyon survives six years

Long before survival games became all the rage, there was Xsyon. In fact, it may very well be what started Massively OP's MJ on her survival path. She played the game in the early years as it was developing, but she hasn't been back in a while. It's definitely time to jump in and check things out again. Maybe this time she won't die to crazy chickens or psychotic squirrels! It's not like the Ides of March is all about death. Oh. Tune in live at 5:00 p.m. to celebrate six years of survival in...

Xsyon kicks off a season full of events, including a mutant rodeo

Just because the world's been ruined doesn't mean that Xsyon players can't have a good time, eh?

A new season of fun events starts this weekend in the post-apocalyptic title. The first event will be a cart race, which will be followed up by such entertaining fare such as a mutant rodeo, an Easter bunny hunt, a stand-up comedy night, bear feeding (whatever that is), a Hunger Games competition, and some good old-fashion fishing. Probably with dynamite or low-yield nuclears.

The event season is being hosted by both the developers and the game's community. The devs are handing out event tokens to all participants and winners to be able to spend on prizes later on in the season.

Xsyon drops subscription, becomes pure buy-to-play

If the subscription fee ever kept you away from the post-apocalyptic sandbox Xsyon, we're happy to share with you that this is no longer a barrier to play. Yesterday the lead developer announced that he was dropping the subscription in favor of making the early access title straight-up buy-to-play.

Reasons cited for the decision include changes in the industry, resistance to a sub-based early access title, and the fact that half of the players weren't subscribing anyway. Xsyon: Prelude currently costs $30 on Steam.

The developer maintained his faith in subscriptions while being pragmatic about the move: "Although I personally still favor the subscription model, it's clearly turning away too many players at the moment. Without the subscription, new players will be more inclined to join and old players are welcome to return!"

Xsyon to host first capture the flag event this weekend

Got the urge to prove your PvP skills and get rewarded for it? Xsyon is holding its first ever Capture the Flag event this Saturday, May 30th, starting at 3:00 p.m. EDT. Just as you'd expect from such a contest, teams of participants will infiltrate each others' forts in an effort to abscond with the enemy flag and return it to their own. The first team to successfully capture three flags wins the glory and the pot.

Although the event will be held on a PvP server, players can pay their entry fee from any server (including PvE) and all winnings will also be distributed to any server. Guides will form the teams as well as distribute the armor and weapons to promote fairness. More details can be found on the official site.

Xsyon's trade update is now live

Xsyon players are enjoying their second major update this month, thanks to the recent trade patch, which follows on the heels of the architecture update from May 8th.

The trade patch adds the trading post, from which players may obtain "valuable patterns, schemes, and blueprints for crafting and building." The update also lays the groundwork for various building uses including taverns, toll gates, workshops, welcome stations, and infirmaries, according to Notorious Games' announcement post. You can view the full patch notes on Xsyon's website.

Xsyon patch adds architecture parts, fixes bugs

Xsyon's architecture mechanics got some love in yesterday's patch. New parts were added, including the 16x16 truss, 16 meter beams, and 8.8 and 16.8 meter beams. Notorious Games has "heavily optimized" the game's architecture support checking function, which it calls "10 times faster now" and which should reduce pauses while placing parts.

The devs also fixed a number of bugs in the post-apocalyptic sandbox. You can view a list of changes on Xsyon's official website.

Xsyon gets a 'massive architecture update'

Fun fact: Xsyon is one of two words that I constantly misspell. The other is archaeology.

In other news, Xsyon got a "massive architecture update" this week, according to the patch notes. Everything from multistory buildings to terraforming to building constraints was tweaked, and Notorious Games also added some nifty new renderings that display scaffolds and the like while buildings are being, er, built.

The patch includes plenty of "general improvements" and bug fixing for the post-apocalyptic sandbox, too.
