Eternal Crusade lead level designer is the latest in a string of desertions

Eternal Crusade seems to have a retention problem with its employees, as Lead Level Designer Steven Lumpkin just became the latest of a series of devs who have left the project this year.

Lumpkin announced that he is leaving Behaviour Interactive for another game studio: “In a week, I will be departing my role as Lead Level Designer on Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade. I feel gratified to have worked with this team for the past two years, and they’re well positioned to deliver a strong founder’s access. I look forward to battling alongside you all when it gets into our hands later this year.”

When he departs, Lumpkin will join the ranks of fellow ex-Eternal Crusade developers Studio Head Miguel Caron and Lead Programmer Patrick Balthazar, both of whom have left in the past few months.

MikedotFoster I’m pretty sure there is. Back in the 1980s and 1990s, GW were quite fussy and argumentative about their licensing, and it seems to me like they built up quite a bit of bad karma over the years, which has been revisiting them for about the last 20. (Having said all that, I’d say the WH40K RTSs are the exception to the rule). :D

I think the big concern here has always been that Behaviour has never developed anything this huge. Losing key devs is bad news, but it seems even worse from a studio whose biggest accomplishments thus far have been porting other people’s titles.
Maybe it’s just the Warhammer curse. Is there a Warhammer curse?

Darkdrakke Yeah, I backed at the $40 level too. However, while this isn’t great news, it’s also not evidence that the game is folding. If they can get early access out sometime this year, and it plays well, I’ll be plenty happy.

Until I see some actual ‘doom’ worthy news, this doesn’t sound THAT unusual, really. They’re still on track with stuff, they’re still updating people, the alpha stuff still looks pretty decent.
Yes, it’s three quite high up devs. HOWEVER, people seem to forget that even lead-devs sometimes have changes in real-life circumstances that might require a change in current job, might get a better offer from another studio or project (films and especially games are pretty cut-throat in that regard) and, y’know… a hundred and one reasons to suggest business as usual.
Honestly, I’m more immune to ‘Doom’ now than ever. After all, hasn’t WoW been ‘doomed’ since Burning Crusade or even before? Along with numerous other games that are ‘doomed’ yet, magically, still going strong? Hell, FF14 WAS doomed, and that still had a spare Phoenix Down kicking around.

PurpleCopper Agreed, the 40k franchise needs a lot more single / small scale mp modern games then just the DoW franchise and space marine. (what id give for a 40k action rpg… oh god)

Neo_Wolf Nreff DPandaren mmonerd  So are you talking about the Warhammer 40k MMO that Relic had been working on before it got canned?  Don’t think Eternal Crusade was ever listed as anything other than a PvP MMO-ish shooter thing.

DPandaren Sorenthaz Neo_Wolf mmonerd  Oh.  My memory on it is stupidly hazy because I only played the demo.   Guess it was more of a third-person action hack-n-slash or something.
