The Daily Grind: Has your favorite MMO been DDoSed?

Shroud of the Avatar

So, Shroud of the Avatar got DDoSed yesterday. Shroud of the Avatar!? While there’s really no excuse for any DDoS attack, it kind of blew my mind that someone would attack SOTA given the general likeability of its devs and the positive vibes given off by the game’s community as a whole.

I guess bad apples are everywhere, but still, I was surprised that the crowdfunded fantasy sandbox would attrack that sort of attention. What about you, MOP readers? Has your game of choice been DDoSed, and if so, were you surprised that it happened?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

It may have once been done mostly by angry players, but I think that time has probably passed.  It often is done by people just wanting to brag, troll or grief.  Smaller or less obvious targets are usually far less ready and expecting for this stuff to happen, meaning they can be affected far more and for a longer period of time.  They don’t need any reason to do it specifically, a game only needs to exist to get DDoS attacks done on it.  I’m not surprised by any game that is hit really.

At one point in my childhood game, a single guild on a single server was responsible for DDoS’ing every server for the sake of sniping individual players they were at war with and grabbing good hunting spots. Gotta love people, eh?

Wurm Online has been DDOSed at some point, which encouraged devs to quickly move to better datacenter and release the new megaserver known as Xanadu.
Only in Wurm <3

Can’t think of an MMO I’ve played that hasn’t had a DDoS at some point…

DDoS are rarely about “making a point” these days. Making trojans and maintaining botnets takes money and effort. Especially good, large botnets that can actually shut dead servers of a company. Most DDoS are for ransom purposes. 100% of DDoS on launch day, or before launch day, are “pay up, or we ruin your launch”. It is known that online games live and die by their launches, and bad launch will (and has) ruin any company that is not Blizzard. Since IPv4 protocol has no defined means of defending against DDoS, and in fact has some parts in it that allow for most efficient, unavoidable and undefendable DDoS – parts that are integral to the protocol, and cannot be changed, disabled or modified without breaking away from the protocol – until IPv6 becomes the standart, which won’t happen for a while because the Internet Companies prefer to not spend any money on upgrading infrastructure as long as they can milk the old one. DDoS are in fact profitable to them too – they generate traffic. And someone pays for that traffic. Usually – the companies at the receiving end of a DDoS.

It could just be an attempt to get media coverage to help the game.  Um.. well wait…  It’s working.

Truly bothers me that we are discussing this as if it’s the norm. I don’t wanna know if my favorite game has a bunch of petty disgruntled customers who have nothing better to do than lash out and ruin my fun. Bad games and greedy developers have been around for a long time and will continue exist regardless of the lashing out from disgruntled gamers.DDoS attacks are not helping the cause. There’s no justice in denying a gamers right to play even the worst developed games. If you have any issues with a gamer or developer….they are yours to deal with, not mine. Don’t attack my game because you can’t handle your emotions or don’t know how to properly handle your dissatisfaction.

ManastuUtakata AdeptusEnginus wild_abyss Hah, it’s the server I main on. I joined it when I first started my trial after discovering it’s status as the unofficial RP server.

I’m still angry about that attack that was launched against WildStar the moment it released at midnight. People worked their asses off for years and years to create that game, then at the moment they had all been waiting for, some ass/asses launch an attack and take the wind out of their sails. It was just an asshole thing to do, and it still really annoys me.
