Richard Garriott’s first CRPG playable in Shroud of the Avatar

In 1977, Richard Garriott designed his first computer RPG on a teletype at his high school in order to earn a computer of his own from his father. The game was called, simply enough, DND #1.

Garriott saved the printout code and challenged the Shroud of the Avatar fanbase a year ago to “reincarnate” it for the online game. Fast-forward to today, and DND #1 is finally playable in SotA on a teletype housing item that can be purchased from the in-game store.

The latest SotA newsletter mentions this addition, as well as the work that’s being done on a desert template for player cities. Shroud of the Avatar will be patching up to Release 18 on May 28th with a new tour challenge and a new hat (a bycocket, if you’re wondering).

woolydub They’re not getting a cut, I don’t think, but they did win a prize as per the contest rules. Winning entries “will receive a  $550 Citizen pledge, and our 4 runners-up will receive a $165 Collector pledge”. So they get the game itself, a whole bunch of digital and physical doodads, and a permanent upkeep-free in-game house.

Nope. All proceeds of the cash shop from SotA go directly to Richard Garriot as fuel for his next space walk…

Having been engrossed with Richard Garriott’s games since Ultima 3, it pains me to admit how much I passionately can’t stand SoTA.  I want sooo bad to like it.

The graphics are horrible. The deck system is obnoxious.  Travel/mapping is brutal. Monetization is rampant.

Bonnenuit I always called it a paper airplane… or Errol Flynn hat. Now I know what it’s called. You really do learn something new every day!

You lost me at “bycocket.” Seriously, though… can you even say that here?!

Also, @RichardGarriott @LordBritish @GodsWalkAmongstUs — you’re unbelievable.

SoTA is one game I don’t follow. Nor will I ever.

I have that much faith in my Lord British. Have my baby. Err, money. I meant have my money.

Players designed this. That’s really cool. What’s the story on who gets paid though? I hope the players in charge of designing this are getting a cut. If they did, that’s awesome!
