Valiance Online begins a patch blitz

Superheroes don’t do anything in half-measures, and neither does City of Heroes spiritual successor Valiance Online. The team updated the title yesterday with the first of a promised series of patches: “This first release is dedicated to testing the new zone, the new physics servers, and the zone’s capacity and performance standards of our current target platform. As we complete tests, we’ll begin to patch in updates rapidly.”

The patch adds in the new animation and sound systems as well as better tech for rendering foliage. NPC and enemy mobs also saw an uptick to their intelligence with the update, with the ability to observe surroundings, move around, and react to situations.

MagmaFist ValianceOnline ZNSinger Darth Fez Ekphrasis It is playable but it is pre-alpha so don’t expect a full game (yet). You can run, jump, fly. There are a small number of powersets and limited character customization. One large starter area right now with limited mobs. Much more will be patched in shortly to improve features or add new ones. We’ll be talking more about that soon… and once our new website is up, it will have much more detailed information.

HidingCat We’re in pre-alpha. Did a big back-end patch recently and this week did the first part of a series of client patches that will be improving on or adding in features.

Huh, what, it’s actually sort of playable now?

I missed this – I’m really looking forward for a Superhero MMO, but I was under the impression the CoH spiritual successors were very far away from any kind of playable product.

Definitely got my fingers crossed for this. A supe MMO not tied to the big two in the spirit of CoX. Yes please. Good luck to both you and CoT. You’ll have my backing.

ValianceOnline ZNSinger Darth Fez Ekphrasis And just want to add that I responded to this whole thing because after seeing each improvement you guys have made, I gain more confidence that you will make something beyond ‘just a spiritual successor’ and VO will become its own unique experience. To me, the past months with Ron Friedman, working with other City of Heroes devs, the move to Unity 5, the improvement in graphics and movement in game and now the recent patch schedule, it looks like Valiance Online has some great momentum. It is exciting to watch.

ValianceOnline MagmaFist ZNSinger Darth Fez Ekphrasis Is it playable now? What are the mechanics? Do we have the long hold, sleep, stun, etc times of City of Heroes are the more ubiquitious short timers of a couple seconds found in other MMOs. Will there be pets? Are pets more controllable or you leaving that to a Mastermind like class? What extra abilities do you have planned for the Commander beyond what was offered in CoH?

MagmaFist ZNSinger Darth Fez Ekphrasis Actually we have answered that question several times, we will have a “commander” type of character.
