On this morning’s investor call, Activision-Blizzard announced a new endeavor for the company: its very own movie and TV studio.

Activision Blizzard Studios will be headed up by former Disney exec Nick van Dyk and focus first on an animated TV show called Skylanders Academy and “a robust cinematic universe based on the Call of Duty franchise,” with a target date of 2018 or 2019.

Van Dyk told investors, “Activision Blizzard Studios has the unique advantage of starting with a library of world-class intellectual property that includes some of the largest franchises which have not yet been developed in film and television. […] Activision Blizzard Studios is not just an exciting new business for our company, it is a synergistic complement to our core business. Our movies and shows will benefit from the remarkable IP created in our games and will further increase the awareness of, engagement with, and passion for our franchises.”

An Activision Blizzard movie and TV studio? Headed up by a former Disney exec? And we keep hearing Overwatch will have lore, but it supposedly doesn’t have a story mode. Could we possibly be getting an Overwatch cartoon/movie/TV show/something along those lines? Oh please, please, please be so.

Whats the bets that Disney will own Blizzard within 20 years like Marvel and Lucasfilm ?

If I were Activision Blizzard Studios, I would not do “live-action” movies and TV. I would animate their IP’s just like their CGI game trailers. Which are quite polished and could easily pass as a full fledged film.

VilleUusitalo There are a lot of neat expanded stories already written for Diablo and Starcraft. So they have a foot in making new stories right there outside of the games.

Wouldn’t the stories be mostly about lore we already know? Since it can’t be about many new major events as that would conflict with the games their story.

And so would side stories about other characters be interesting? Granted there’s a lot of lore people aren’t aware off unless you really dig into it both in warcraft and starcraft.

I do find making a tv series about wars to be a mistake since, while band of brothers did great there hasn’t been anything since that did well. I would say that CoD is one of the least interesting universes to make a story about.
