The Secret World kicks off 12 days of deals

Do you love The Secret World and have some disposable income to toss in its direction? Then Funcom’s 12 Days of Deals could be the temptation you need to go broke! Starting today, TSW will put one “top-selling” item in the store on sale (excluding issues and sidestories). Today’s deal, for example, is… 40% off mystery boxes. OK, maybe tomorrow’s deal will be better. Hang in there.

The Secret World also provided a preview of its new gift-giving system that will be coming with Issue #13. Through this system, friends can send each other items from the store purchased with Funcom points. Not everything in the store will be available as a potential gift at the start; for example, clothing isn’t on the table for the initial release of this system.

Hell yes to this and gosh, I wish!
I wish the cooler costumes were available for straight cash instead of a gamble box, even if the costumes were going for elevated prices. I won’t gamble for them though, so I’m missing out. I know I’m missing out so I’m less enthusiastic towards playing. I’m less enthusiastic, so I’ll ‘forget’ to log in… This leads me to go for months sometimes without logging into what was once a favorite game.
And here’s the thing: I don’t mind cash shops. I *will* buy vanity gear, lots and lots of vanity gear; I’m a huge fashion whore. Developers that resort to gamble boxes are losing me as a customer.

johnmynard LordSolarMacharius that’s sort of along the lines of saying the government should sell hard drugs. I mean… I wouldn’t use them but they’d make a lot of money off other people and that could pay for things I want.

If what’s inside is so wonderful that people would buy them anyway and it’s not an addiction they’re preying on, why don’t they just sell what’s inside for cash instead ?

LordSolarMacharius The fact of the matter is, they are gambling, they are more akin to a raffle.  It’s not gambling if you are guaranteed something of value.  The point is that they have to keep the lights on somehow and lockboxes are a fairly painless, but reliable way to do that.  They aren’t required to play the game in any way, shape, form, or fashion.
So quit yer bellyachin’!

Greaterdivinity NascentVision You actually don’t even need to do any scenarios anymore. The seal now costs one black bullion, and since the currency revamp, absolutely everything gives you bullion.

Theryl webhunter Greaterdivinity luxundae Exactly as folks have said above….the Side Stories made it easier (offered a way to skip the annoying repetition of dozens of scenarios), and then quite recently they changed it to only require a single scenario completion.

I do recommend watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oax7Izsd4kY just before you enter (but after you do the Issue 7 content).   That shows the very end of the Whispering Tide event that was originally used to open the Tokyo portal.

Preferable story order would be:
1. Complete story missions in Translyvania.
2. Go back and do Issue 5 (Tyler Freeborn), because it’s cool and dark and creepy.
3. Do issue 6 if you really want to.  It’s not bad, but I found it to be the weakest of the issues.
4. Definitely do Issue 7.  It sets you up for why Tokyo is important and who some of the big players are, and it’s just really fun.
5. Do the mandatory Issue 8 content to unlock Tokyo.
6. Watch the Whispering Tide video real quick.
7. Jump through the portal into Tokyo!

Some of the very early Tokyo story mission involves, spoiler, chasing someone through the sewer system for a while.  I found it to be a bit of a drag.  Please don’t bounce off it at that point.  It’s literally all uphill from there and the story rapidly gets interesting and dark and creepy.  :)
