In most MMOs, weather is merely a variable environment cosmetic. Whether it’s rainy, sunny, or snowy, the only difference to the player is visibility and screenshot quality. In Worlds Adrift, a game where you explore the skies in your own airship, weather is a terrifying and very real force of its own.
This week, the Worlds Adrift team shared some of its ideas behind the so-called “weather walls” in the game. These are bands of particularly hostile weather that players will need to navigate and survive to make it to new areas. If a ship isn’t strong enough to do so, it will spin out and be ejected from the storm.
The weather walls aren’t mere gear checks, either. Players will need to demonstrate skill and quick thinking to make it past these barriers, especially if a lightning strike hits the ship and takes out some components. Of course, you could always play it safe and stay in the newbie zones forever!
