Das Tal puts power ratings in front of player names

Here’s a not-so-hypothetical question for you: If you were playing a highly competitive multiplayer game, would you want a rating concerning your skill and gear to be displayed on screen at all time? In other words, would you be cool with the game telling others how much of an elite — or noob — player you are?

Das Tal is trying out such a system with today’s patch: “Added a ‘power level indicator’ before your character name. It goes from C (complete newbie) to A++ (top 5% of all players). This indicator is an amalgation of your play time, equipment quality, ability levels, and [kill/death] ratio.”

The patch also changes up the experience system, adds rested XP bonuses, introduces an event calendar, and allows players to create up to three characters per server.

Das Tal got a nice injection of funding earlier this month from investors that will allow the team to complete the core game.

I haven’t been able to get hyped about this game. Every video I see is just a bunch of diabloesque characters performing single animation scythe swings with different colors

orionite Nordavind Ah yes, I forgot about enegry rating. It’s still an odd system :)

Robert80 Hopefully you are. But if you’re not then this feature will quickly be gone again. Experimentation is what makes alpha dev fun for us devs. =D

MewmewGirl Hah. I haven’t kept up with Blizzard’s April’s Fools – gotta admit that the EPEEN is quite epic. =D

Nordavind dbltnk orionite Nice, might be worth giving a shot when we rework our UI in the coming months. *noted*

Nordavind orionite It’s used on both sides of the Atlantic. E.g. Energy Rating in Europe, Credit / Financial Strength Rating in the US. A better argument against it would be immersion, imho. Stars/Skulls etc, would be a little less bureaucratic looking, maybe :)

dbltnk orionite Nordavind O hai dev! I like devs that roams the comment fields :)
Yes, I had a feeling that it was the case, as soon as I though about setting it to more letters that didn’t feel well either. Especially if you had included F. “Oh look, I’m a failure”.
Numbers (5 to 1) would be better (I am a maths and numbers person), but maybe a bit dull.
So, I’d go with symbols. Either one fixed symbol that changes colour/ slightly shape a bit or increase in number. Like stars. Can’t go wrong with stars. Or skulls. Like this (comic sans very much intended):

orionite Nordavind That it’s used elsewhere does not make it less so, and it’s not one used on this side of the Atlantic AFAIK. Anyway, yes, most scales are arbitrary, maybe I should have gone with odd or something, although that does not quite cover it I feel.

Remember when Blizzard made an April Fool’s joke about this kind of stuff, because it was something outrageous to actually do for real in MMOs?  I think that was right before numerous games started to actually do it.

dbltnk quinnthalas Fair enough, thanks for explaining the thought process behind it, I appreciate that.
