Firefall’s 1.7 patch tomorrow brings Devil’s Tusk zone content, elite ranks overhaul

Bye! Wait, no. Wait, yes!

Firefall’s 1.7 is on the public test server and is due for deployment on the live servers tomorrowday. The big news is the arrival of the Devil’s Tusk zone content refresh and multi-phase world event. The Baneclaw boss fight returns as well with signature weapon drops for all archetypes; optimization work likewise continues, and leftover migration issues are still being investigated.

Perhaps the most significant (and most controversial) addition in 1.7 lands in the form of retroactive experience curve adjustments for elite ranks. Red 5 explains,

“The topic of Elite Ranks has been under discussion since their implementation in Update 1.6. The team has been monitoring system behavior as well as player feedback. Making a big change like this does not come quickly, easily, or lightly. There have been many debates internally on the subject and the team feels that implementing a curve where the amount of XP required per Elite Rank will gradually increase as a battleframe gets further into the system.”

“With Elite Ranks in its previous iteration, we noticed that players were getting extremely powerful rather quickly. While we do want the player to have increases in their stats to feel an impact while engaging with the system, the results were very extreme. With the changes incoming, players should still have tangible power increases, even early on in the system, without achieving a point where there is absolutely no challenge in the game whatsoever.”

It’s one of those games I actually want to see become better — it’s very popular in this house — but the constant “rebooting” of how it works doesn’t help fan or foe.
As you say, what makes it unique is genuinely fun, but the focus needs to shift more toward adding on to the game which exists, rather than constantly re-tuning the base game.
Sometimes, you just have to pick your spot and go forward from there.
I can’t think of a single major MMORPG which doesn’t have some core design elements which couldn’t plausibly be seen as “sub-optimal” or “wrong” by a certain faction of players ,,,
… but constantly changing core mechanics simply changes which players are displeased, I think — plus, you end up “competing” with your own game’s past versions.
Better to just pick a spot, say “we’re this now, come hell or high water”, and move forward with new content, as you suggest.
Cheers.

Does the client as run through steam still force-login when run, even with login dets deleted with no way to prevent that? If so, I refuse to come back to this game due to NO ACCOUNT SECURITY. Makes a total mockery of 2-step website login when literally 1 click will deliver my characters and whole account to anyone without any kind of logging in sequence needed and no way to disable it.

Firefall: a game I would play if only it wasn’t heavily ping-reliant and all their servers were based solely in US-East.

I hope they restore all the bugged characters that can’t load in the game.

Damonvile Samizdat Probably what happened was all the horizontal progression fans already left the game, so the devs gotta make it more and more vertical to keep those remaining players hooked.

Damonvile Samizdat Terribly sad what happened to this game. Still the best movement system in any MMO I’ve played, and genuinely fun (if comically unbalanced) gunplay/abilities. Like a mix of Tribes and Quake as an MMO.

All they had to do was build on it instead of rebuild it.

At this point you could title each article about firefall as “HERES WHAT THE DART LANDED ON ON THE DIRECTION AND IDEAS DARTBOARD THIS WEEK”.

ER’s killed this game. They always seem to put out a good update with something game breaking in it. They gave out these xp packs to the QQ vets that didn’t like the gear changes made so now they have a game so unbalanced that its not even fun to play most of the time. They put out patch 1.6 a few months ago with changes that the vet players were complaining about so the give out these xp pack. Now all players didn’t get the same amount of packs. So you have players with 20 ER’s and some with 2000. And these ranks come with power perks. And the worse part is these vet players have the nerve to put down anyone who complains about the game unbalance. The player base in this game has turned completely into garbage over this and all they do is fight. I swear its so sad whats happened to this game. I wish some company would take it away from Red5. This game could really have been a good one. Just go over to forums and read all the crap being posted. It will make you stay away from this game.
