LOTRO fights the lag monster of Update 20

It stands to reason that Lord of the Rings Online players are pretty thrilled this week to be exploring the outskirts of Mordor, but this excitement has been tempered by severe lag that is hitting many of the servers. Standing Stone Games acknowledged the problem yesterday and said that it is working on a fix.

“We are aware of the lag issues occurring in the new U20 regions and are working on a solution,” the studio said on the forums. “We will be making changes to live servers shortly in response to the lag seen in areas of the Update 20 landscape. We will continue to monitor both client- and server-based lag from there, and are planning a patch for early next week.”

On an Update 20-related note, players commented on the quality of the promotional artwork for the patch. SSG informed the community that it had commissioned renowned Tolkien artist Ted Nasmith to create the illustration and that a wallpaper version will be forthcoming.

I took 30 min of my life, which I’m never getting back, and researched/read about the current issues. This literally epitomizes the Turbine/SSG experience. Remember folks at the SSG announcement the biggest reveal (IMHO) was that all along TURBINE NOT WB had design and system control over LOTRO. The kicker? SSG is going to be comprised of long term TURBINE employees who have been working on the game for years.

So what happened at U20? What I was able to gather was (summarized)

1. New rep grind was introduced (standard lotro)
2. One area of the map had a concentration of mobs who disproportionately dropped more items.
3. SSG increased the loot drop if you were in a group

Turbine has known for YEARS they have lag issues. It’s an older game, its forgivable to a degree. The items above though? You implement that KNOWING you have lag issues. I mean you can’t make that stuff up, either the disconnect is severe (evidenced by the –reveal- at SSG game announcement, it was TURBINE all along) or they take their existing player base for granted to the extreme. Assuming they will play the game no matter what condition it’s in.

When your company makes into the urban dictionary for a gaming fail its pretty telling. When you REPEAT the fail in perpetuity I mean what the hell can you say to that?

I don’t have lag issues with LOTRO. Never have really, the game has always run well since launch. I admit I’ve not tried the ‘massive battle’ stuff like Helm’s Deep, but I can well imagine attempting something like that could cause lag.

I tried going back a few weeks ago but the lag in bree alone was enough for me to drop the game again, I would go back in the drop of a heart beat if they could fix the lag issues through out the world but I have lost faith, the bree issues alone have been reported for ages with no fix or interest to fix

Its funny to be as well as i never noticed lag in bree or any other area (except Minas Tirith) in the past 6 years of me playing lotro … maybe its your computer causing the problems cuz i never heard any one having lag problems unless there are 24ppl+ in 1 single dungeon with all spells and all included fighting a major animated boss OR as i said minas tirith …

Love the artwork on that guy’s page. Reminds me of the art in the old Middle Earth Role Playing books.

I am glad that they are tackling the lag problems because it has been a killer for me too to the point I stepped away from Lotro this week to play something else. Hopefully this will happen soon ™ as I very much want to continue my journey and explore the new area.
