Overwatch is overhauling Mercy’s Resurrect to fix counterintuitive mechanics

Heroes do actually die, but...

Blizzard’s latest Overwatch dev video suggests big changes for everybody’s favorite pocket healer Mercy. For starters, her ultimate — Resurrect — will move down to the common tier and be replaced by a sweet new Valkyrie flying move that befits her winged outfit. The downside is that her rez will now be a single-target skill with a long cooldown and small radius.

Blizz’s Jeff Kaplan says the goal is to improve the Mercy play experience and fix the counterintuitive problem of Mercy’s needing to run and hide when her ult is up until everyone dies and can be resurrected — instead of, you know, actually playing and healing.

The Overwatch player who resides in my own house is a big Mercy fan and expressed shock over the changes, and the 5000-comment Reddit thread seems equally torn over whether to consider the changes an overall buff or nerf.

Patch notes are live now if you want to take a look at the full run-down of her skill changes; the dev vlog is down below.

The overt Opness reality aside these changes seem to make mercy an absolute blast to play. My vote would be to keep them and buff the other healers. Lucios ult needs work, Ana could use a grappling hook and zenyatta should get 2 or 3 charges on his orbs.

I still don’t get wtf symmetra is.

She craps out sentries around doorways that obliterate me when playing Zen before I even realize I’m taking damage

Symmetra is basically a roamer support.

The Defense Matrix nerf made me salivate! That ability is way too powerful.

Big fan of the idea behind the changes (and the change to Rein to let him look around while his shield is deployed), but they’re going to need to do some serious tuning on it. 20s uptime on her ult is nuts, and seeing her with her/ana ult popped absolutely wreck teams is hilarious. Definitely going to need to reduce the duration and/or power and tune her elsewhere, either dropping her mobility down a bit or adding some kind of overheat/ammo system to her gun to counter its strength (and possibly dropping that as well).

But I’m still a fan, moving her res to a single target res on a decent cooldown is a good move. Between that and her changed ult, once it’s balanced, I can see her getting playtime in tournaments more consistently. Now they just need to address Roadhog, who is still bloody broken after they rekt his ability to hook-kill squishies.

Hopefully this comes with the deathmatch mode update, I do want to give the game another go when that comes out. Not having to worry about teammates completely ignoring objectives is going to be nice.

So wait, Blizzard completely changes how a class works, forcing you to relearn mechanics and teamplay all over?

That’s totally unlike them.

because while she is buffing/healing you she gets kill credit for assisting plus she gets credit for her rez. The actual damage she does with her pistol is shitty.

the threads i was reading is she’s better at dps than dps heroes now. not about gettting kill credits for healing/buffing.

someone even made a cartoon about it :D

DPS in a shooter doesn’t mean much. Take the Medic in TF2 for example. His default syringe gun is one of the highest, if not the highest, DPS weapon in the game. But you don’t see teams of all Medics battling it out because that’s dumb and doesn’t work well against a more varied team.

But this is also Overwatch, which doesn’t know what it wants.

Also because the syringe gun is terrible at range, denies medic healing and has the confirm capabilities of a doped shit-flinger monkey.
