Sea of Thieves patches in performance improvements, promises to get everyone in to play as it breaks 2M players

One week after launch, Sea of Thieves is sailing the choppy ocean of live operation with two million players already. The developers uploaded an update video about the “hectic” week they’ve had and the preparations for the game’s first post-launch patch.

With demand for Sea of Thieves “off the charts,” Rare is working hard to scale the game’s servers to allow everyone to get on and play. Other issues, such as rewards not appearing and character details disappearing, are being investigated and fixed.

Today’s Patch 1.01 — which pretty much requires players to re-download the entire 20GB client — deploys a host of fixes and performance upgrades. Get the lowdown on the pirate life after the break!

How many of those 2 million players logged back in a second or third time? We haven’t and I’m sure we’re not the only ones …

Too many of them if overflowing servers are an indication of this. this game is going to have a long tail if they can put out content quick enough.

redownloading the whole client is a sign of complete function design failure on the part of the devs

You know your game is going to be online only, and yet… you fail to design a modular patching system that allows you to push changes without requiring a full build push.

Its 2018. Stuff like this shouldnt be happening in the triple A industry. Period

Redownloading the client is unfortunately nothing new for those of us who were in the testing phases. I’m hoping this won’t be the trend of all updates though.

having to redownload the entire client was not a welcome surprise for the people i play with the most yday. my buddy ended up starting the download on his xbox when the ms store pc version was at 30% and it beat the pc version download by a wide mile. ><

get this game a "delta patcher" ASAP! lol

I am certainly glad I haven’t jumped in yet, re-downloading the entire thing would have delayed me by a day or so as well as just piss me off.

Yeeeep I’m stuck with a 1.5MB download speed at best so it took pretty much all day to get the thing downloaded. Really annoying.

Unfortunately it’s nothing new. In the Alpha/Beta sessions pretty much every patch was basically a full redownload. :/

didn’ty realize that. i was more impressed that unlike steam it actualy auto downloaded in the background at all.

which steam doesn’t seem to wanna do anymore the past some odd years. used to work fine but idk, anytime i go to play a steam game on a patch day always have to manually start the download.

b-dawg’s pc download actualyl did that but it was super slow for w/e reason. or so it seemed. we weren’t too sure how long his pc had been powered on yday >>

Well I think it’s something you can change in Steam’s settings. Steam always schedules to start downloading stuff some hours after an update becomes available for me, and still goes ahead and autodownloads once that time comes if I’m not playing anything through Steam at the time.

it gets to it eventually. just not soon enough.

and yeah it’s set to same thing for me it’s just annoying when i go to play a game on patch days lol. cuz my computer will have usually been on 3-5 hours by the time i’m ready to play a game and oh look i’m still waiting to patch, time to figure out how and where to click to get that started again lol
