WRUP: Know your dragons edition

roar?

If the dragon has four legs and two wings, it’s a dragon. If it has two rear legs and wings instead of front legs, it’s a wyvern. If it has four legs and no wings, but a long curving body, it’s an Eastern dragon. If it has no wings and no legs, it’s a wyrm. If it has four legs and four wings, it’s two wyverns glued together frantically struggling to separate themselves. If it has four wings and no legs, it’s a boss in a Final Fantasy game. Probably. There has to be something like that in one game or another, right?

If it has four legs, no wings, and a normal body, it’s a drake. If it has two legs, two arms, and was born in Canada in 1986, it’s Drake. If it has four wheels and is made of metal, it’s a car. If it has four legs and two wings and converts into a robot, it’s Megatron. If it has four wings where legs should be and two legs where wings should be, it is a crime against nature. If it has lots of heads it is a hydra. If it has no head it is a corpse. If it is What Are You Playing you should tell us your weekend plans in the comments.

Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): E3 research has begun. It’s interesting to see who I have (and haven’t) heard back from. Gotta prep for that though. Pokemon Go will probably happen so I see sunlight, and maybe Splatoon 2 in the evenings if I feel like I’ve gotten enough work done but can’t quite sleep yet. Really wishing I could give Sea of Thieves and even Overwatch some time though!

Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Video games! It’s gonna be great to have a weekend where I can really play. I’ve been playing some Trove already, and I ducked into Ultima Online to clean some stuff up to maybe deactivate my account for a little while. We’ll see – I may chicken out of that. But definitely Trove – the whole fam is subbed right now.

Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): Oh, you know how it is; Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy XI, maybe some other Final Fantasy titles because I’m on a roll or something. That should pretty well fill up my weekend between finishing up our house purchase and doing other things with my wife.

Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog): Who isn’t playing some Fallout something right now in preparation for Fallout 76? I am, I am! Might be time to actually finish a full playthrough of Fallout 4, so I’m loading that back up. Otherwise, some random adventures in Star Trek Online, World of Warcraft, and Secret World Legends are lined up. And Bless Online… AHAHAHA just kidding. I wouldn’t touch that trashpile.

Been playing the heck out of Bless. I get the issues, but fun is fun. Found a group of people to play with that also enjoy the game, and having a blast.

Tried Albion Online and got my first videogame refund in a longtime. I was totally fine with the grindy as fug game with runescape graphics. What i did not expect was moba combat and the blandest zones ive seen in an mmo in years. I love the concept but the execution blows.
Then back to FFXIV where i got DRK to cap and the lvl.70 quest is one of the most fun job quests in the game no question. Now working on BRD but i’m at the point all the jobs i play are capped again and this is just for completionists sake.
Also had a few hours in Absolver on PS4. Basically Dark Souls but as a cel shaded martial arts based game. Instead of weapons you pick up moves and make a ‘deck’ of combos. Pretty fun but so far the other players are always a dick trying to run up and nuke me and they die do parrying and dodging which they dont seem to know how to do. Fun game but i think most of the playerbase has moved on.

Outside of games i’ve really been caught up by the latest Warhammer army “Idoneth Deepkin” which are basically an elf version of the Shadows over Innsmouth. Basically at the end of Warhammer Fantasy the chaos god Slaanesh consumed all the souls of the elves. When remaking the new world the new elven gods captured and imprisoned slaanesh to extract the souls and make new elves. Trouble was all that time in the stomach of the god of degeneracy didnt leave them unmarked. They shied away from light and ran to the depths of the oceans to live as deep sea creatures. With only 1 in 100 or more born looking like high elves the rest are eyeless, pale skinned deep sea elves called Namarti. Trouble is the soulscarring means their kids are born stillborne with no souls.
So every so many years the ethersea washes up out of the sea onto land. coral and ghostly wrecks erupt form the land and everything behaves like its underwater. Then the Deepkin erupt from the shore riding on sharks and eels that swim through the air of the aethersea, collecting humans to bring back below to steal their souls to give to their stillborn children.
The sinister part being that part of the magic of it all is that when the aethersea recedes and the attack ends the villagers dont remember it happening. At best they wonder why their home has an extra unused bedroom in it or something. They can farm the same villages for centuries, the farmers themselves being the crop of these coastal farmlands.

So that lore really hooked me and i love the model so i’ve dusted off my paints and started working on my first warhammer army in maybe 15 years. Super excited to paint the sunken ship to complement my watery creeps!

-also upgraded my twin peaks collection to blu ray so my format snob friends will finally watch it!

If it has 241 thousand optional legs, of which some look really useful but only are if you use the right combination of the 120 thousand optional wings, then it is a Path of Exile dragon.
Not to mention those legs that looks strong, but when you take a closer look at the wording that comes with it, it says “10% stronger legs when used with other legs that hasn’t got claws except red claws, while spraying fire from dragon heads that have bazinga gems in eye sockets or uses converted cold to fire spray, although only works if conversion came from the upper throat. And doesn’t work with ass-fire as of dragon version 3.3, but you have to watch all ZiggyD video guides to learn that”..

So yes … Playing Path of Exile the new Incursion League, and feeling great because finally Spell totem builds are back in fashion.. well load of things got buffed to the sky and I feel quite OP in this version of Path of Exile.

Hi again, MoP friends! In the time since I posted last, I’ve been busy graduating, job searching (ugh), and preparing to move out of my apartment. Have I missed any cute anime games in my absence? What kind of juicy MMO news has been going on lately?

The games I’ve been playing to keep myself entertained include a lot of Fire Emblem: Heroes and Granblue Fantasy. The latter is a mobile (technically browser-based) gacha game, but it’s a lot less reliant on parting from your hard-earned cash to try and get the best waifus; there’s plenty of room for a F2Per to have fun. But you can definitely spend all your money on gacha if you’re into that. There’s also plenty of stuff to grind for! And with really high daily “energy” caps, plus the guild system, and a TON of story quests, I’ve seen a lot of comparisons to JRPGs or MMOs. If you go to try it, I’ll warn that there’s a lot of fanservice for a variety of different tastes, in both character design and the event scenarios, especially. You either like it/tolerate it or you don’t.

I leave you with an image of one of the cutest dragons (wyverns? chickens?).

Job searching after graduating is a brutal reality, best of luck to you!

I suppose the main thing which has happened is the whole Daybreak may or may not be related to a Russian conspiracy was the main thing which happened.

I searched on the site, and that Daybreak & Russia thing is very, uh…
The world is a scary place.

So first, congrats! Woot! And well done. Ah yes, real life begins, but I think you are looking for a job at a good time. So take it easy peasy and see what develops.

My pigtails are so glad to hear from you again! Bu t don’t let RL take over your life too much…that dog needs to be on a secure chain where possible. I am glad you are doing well though! Don’t be a stranger now! <3

It’s good to be back! At one point, RL definitely got the better of me; I didn’t have time for much of anything, sometimes eating and sleeping included. That lifestyle wasn’t exactly my choice though I don’t intend to let things get that bad again. I want to actually have a life, virtual or otherwise! :P

I hardly ever actually post in WRUP, but I always always always read Eliot’s WRUP intros!

MassivelyOP should bind them all together into one volume and sell it every Christmastime. ;)

Not much MMOs recently sadly, or really much games in general.
My job doing the butcher is tiring, waking up at 5 and needing to sleep at like 8 or 9 is not something I am used too yet. My hands have cracked and bleeding at the knuckles on a semi-daily basis if i’m not careful, not sure how much of this I can take. Feeling like death isn’t great, but hey, I guess I need some hard yakka’.

Yet it did pay off as I finally was able to last week get the item of my hearts desire, an Xbox One X. Along with my now faster internet speed is great.
Not that I have any time or motivation to play games really, but i’m loving the speed which I can open up YouTube!

Been playing Sonic & All Star Racing: Transformed on it as that’s the game with gold currently. It’s an awesome game, pumped for the new one out later this year I think.

How do you find it compares to the original Xbone? I haven’t seen a reason to upgrade as our TV maxes out at 1080p, but I’m told there are other graphical advantages over the original. Is that what you’re seeing?

Hard to tell yet. It’s certainly faster that’s for sure. I’ve focused on some of the X-Enhanced titles I have and I feel there’s an improvement, but i’m honestly not sure how much of it is placebo.
Take Sonic Generations, same code but they made it render at 4K and it feels like it looks better than I last remember playing it when it was 720p.

I have only 1080p TVs as well, but the 4K image (or whatever it might be) automatically super-samples down to match, so you should still be getting improved visual quality even on a Full HD set.

Likewise in Super Lucky’s Tale I could instantly feel an improvement in frame-rate from the 30 cap on the base hardware to the 60 on X.

But without a side to side comparison it’s kinda hard to tell yet, I can feel & see an improvement, but I am biased in wanting to feel an improvement.

So first, Detroit: Become Human, one hec of an experience. It is a single player game, which is an anathema to some MMO faithful, but I give it 8 out of 10 Moes at least. It is PlayStation exclusive, but I really hope they eventually release it on PC with some add-ons perhaps. The game truly takes the idea of “choices that matter” to another level. But it is the drama, the pure “oh, shit! I can’t watch!” drama that makes it a great game.

Next, let’s see. I tinkered with Star Dew Valley multiplayer, and it is fun. But perhaps I’m getting burned out on the genre because it didn’t grab me like it did before.

And BnS still has me in its clutches. This last event has my third alt raiding. So… now it’s three times a week. Somebody make it stop! Lol.

E3 is around the corner, and I’m already getting hyped up for that. It’s the nerdy simple pleasures that I love.

Oh, and count me in for Fallout 76 whenever that drops. I’m betting much sooner than expected too.

After receiving it via Humble Bundle, I’m finally getting around to trying Destiny 2. Even though I’m horrible at shooters I’ve been having a blast so far.

Today’s my birthday so I spent the day hiking and mountain biking in the White Mountains while re-downloading Dungeons & Dragons Online to my new SSD. I also found I had enough points on my account to buy the Mists of Ravenloft adventure pack, so I did, and am now traipsing through the Barovian woods. Tomorrow is earmarked for Trove (and church!). Have a great weekend everybody.

Thanks! I did, although most of it was kinda … outdoors-themed, lol! Getting a larger SSD was a nice gift, as I was having to play musical chairs with even my favorite MMO’s on the old one, and after playing on an SSD you just can’t go back to spinning rust again…
