The Daily Grind: Do you want to see a battle royale mode in any live MMORPGs?

Literally nothing is sacred, and no video game franchise seems capable of escaping the pull of the battle royale, as my trip to a kiddie arcade proved this weekend. Not even PAC-MAN is safe.

Strange to me, however, is that so few existing MMORPGs have sidled up to the subgenre. We see MOBAs and shooters tacking it on left and right, and yeah, games like Maverick are working on bridging the genres, but nothing in existing MMOs. It’s weird, right? It seems like it would be super easy to just whip up a new battle royale battleground or arena in MMOs with PvP sidegames. They’re made for this sort of enclosed PvP minigame.

Battle royale does nothing for me, but dang, it’d be nice to see some MMOs get a cut of that easy money, which I’m sure they’d reinvest back into the RPG part of the game. Right, guys? Guys??

Do you want to see battle royale in any live MMORPGs? Which one might best be suited for it?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

FUCK NO!
There’s ways to build a community and ways to destroy it.
Chasing the Battle Royale trend (or other trends) tends to destroy communities and displace players who feel like they are no longer the focus of the long-standing support for the developers of these games.

So that’s a NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE from me.

I’d like to see it removed from all existence.

I swear I could easily live the rest of my life and never hear the term “battle royale” ever again.

Guild Wars 2 technically already did it with their Hunger Royale thing that they did near the end of beta, I don’t know/recall if they ever brought that back in any way/shape/form.

I’d still like to see an MMO do a MOBA mode, too, sort of like what Alterac Valley did but go deeper than that where you’re required to build your character up from little/nothing each match.

Yeah, I’d play it. The main reason I haven’t played any Battle Royale game yet is that they’re all in formats I don’t care about (such as FPS and survival games).

Tbh, I hope Path of Exile brings it’s April Fools battle royale back for a more serious run. It’s been a while without any news about that though, so the chance is slim.

I say nuke it from orbit, it’s the only way to be sure.

I wouldn’t play it, so it isn’t really something I “Want to see.”

That said, if they throw one into some PvP focus area, I don’t mind. Just so long as it isn’t causing some other portion of the game to suffer a lot. I… don’t think MMOs would work well with it, especially with class ability and gear issues still being a huge struggle to make the PvP as interesting as other games (for the most part.)

Still, if some PvP focus is spent on it, not gonna hurt my feelings at all.

Gender-locked classes (et al) – “How dare you limit my choices in an MMORPG!”
BR in an MMORPG – “No. Please limit my choices in an MMORPG!”

I understand a lot of people don’t like BR, but I don’t understand why more choice in any game isn’t good, as long as this mode has no effect on the core gameplay, and is optional.

I’d like to alter a great line from Deadpool 2.

“as long as this mode has no effect on the core gameplay”

I think this is the fear, that adding such gameplay will take time and resources away from developing pve content.

I know from my COX experiences, they spent time adding the Arenas for folks to pvp in and they were seldom used. This is my perception of it. Might be wrong since i didn’t do pvp in COX too much. In fact the most time I spent in the arenas was Door busting during Halloween.

Problem of phrasing, I think.

If you ask me, “Do you want a BR mode in your MMG,” my answer is a simple “no” …because I don’t. I wouldn’t play it.

If you ask, “Should your MMG have a BR mode?” my answer’s going to be more nuanced, discussing the suitability of a given game’s mechanics, development costs versus player benefits, and the balance between making a play mode a fun option versus “mandatory to advance.”

Had you played the original Fortnite you would understand, i’ll alter a not that good line from an okish kinda song “devs don’t like games, devs like mansions and money”.
