Sandbox sci-fi MMO Rebel Horizons resurfaces with new videos

It’s been a little while since we heard anything from Rebel Horizons, the self-billed “interplanetary sandbox MMORPG” from Entrada Interactive, but it would appear that the devs have been hard at work. The game resurfaced over the past couple of months to release some new images and videos via its official Twitter.

The new screenshots show off some of the game’s presumably extraterrestrial environments, while the videos give players a peek at the outer walls of a settlement apparently called Red Sands and, more excitingly, provide a short demonstration of the game’s “functional life matrix” and quantum gates, whatever exactly those are. One tweet also notes that the game has recently begun internal PvP and AI testing, which hopefully means it’s one step closer to being ready for release. If you want to see the game in action, you can check out the new videos after the cut.

This game got my attention. Iโ€™m curious about the style and game setting, and the cryptic little clues there are on their website (http://rebelhorizons.com/), single-shard, sandbox, open character archetypes, sci-fi, player-driven economy (resource harvesting, management and crafting),

Now I couldn’t much information about the game, but from my perspective, it’s got for it some positives :

1) UE4 – starting to be a well rounded-out and traveled engine, more experienced devs in the market, resources, etc.
2) SpatialOS – as their networking layer, which is always a major hurdle and challenge in MMOs in general, and with UE4 in particular.
3) Miscreated : devs gave previously delivered and run a successful indie game.

On the negative / redflag side :

1) Miscreated used a very different engine (CryEngine), so the devs don’t have that much xp on UE4. It’s also worth noting that they went with the UE4-SpatialOS stack instead of the Lumberyard engine, despite it is likely to be more familiar to them.
2) Website and forums are completely dead, no dev blogs, etc. in the last 1+ year despite stating in the last blog there would be a post “next week”. This hints at the fact that community management is not a big priority for them. Would be curious to hear from Miscreated players how that went for them on that front.
3) Very vague descriptions on the website. No clear indication of pve elements and/or any edgy/novel system to propose.

This was the one with the seedy bar hologram girl in their first big ‘video news’ wasn’t it? I remember thinking that they really went with the lowest end of the “Hey, horny teenage boys, come on over” with that.

Because something sexy and seedy primarily caters to teenage boys? And after it’s all MILFs and housewives in leggings and sweatshirts for us grown-ups? :D

No, because that IS the demographic that such advertising is aimed at. It may hit older males as well, but generally there’s a little less impulse buy there…

Someone put a kickstarter bar of all the MMO’s that are in the works at the top. I am losing track. Actually. Bree and company, a progress bar be kinda neat. Though a troll caller. Wait, mom’s on the phone.

Actually, they do have a weekly column that keeps a list of crowdfunded MMOs : http://massivelyop.com/tag/make-my-mmo/

I don’t believe this one here is a crowdfunded mmo though?

Wish I could figure out what sort of game this is PvP, PvE or both. Looking at their site it reminds me of Star Wars Galaxies.

The line, “recently begun internal PvP and AI testing” leads me to believe it’s another gankbox. Hard to tell for sure, though.

That’s the feeling I also got from it, couldn’t find more info so I’ll assume it’s open PVP. In that case I won’t even bother.
Also after getting burned by The Repopulation, I will never fund a MMO again :)

Hey Crow, man :) Glad to see you around. What’s up with account # 2 tho? Did you “lose” your main? ;)

I’m curious about this game, and I could find sweet little information about it, but it feels like you might be right about the PVP-only . From looking at info on http://rebelhorizons.com/ (which, along with their forums seems rather outdated/dead/not updated for 12 months+).

Now we don’t know if this will be crowdfunded in part or in whole or not, but I say don’t despair, you’ll find your game, even after TR :) Just don’t be too harsh on yourself, nor the devs!

Hey, I think you might confuse me with someone else :). You know there are many crows around, this is my only accoung

Ooopsies, sorry, lol. Extremely similar names, and there weren’t that many people active in the TR forums while I was around. You also both seem to have at least the same level of disappointment towards TR, but I guess of that, we are most of their backers, hah.

I think it’s both, based on :

From http://www.rebelhorizons.com/posts/press-release-2016

Leveraging the power of Moon Colliderโ€™s Kythera AI solution, creatures in the game will naturally evolve and go through a life cycle of their own. Leave a group of them alone long enough and they will become stronger and may need to start adventuring out on their own in search of a new food source. Local cities may even notice the increased number of creatures and start asking players to venture forth to take care of the problem on the cityโ€™s behalf and then reward the players appropriately. If ignored long enough some animals can pose a serious threat to nearby NPC cities eventually resulting in the need to defend entire cities or outposts from infestation.

Also reminding me of SWG :)
