Overwatch’s new looking for group system is a huge hit

Who would have ever imagined that a Blizzard game’s looking for group tool would be a big hit with players? Overwatch only recently expanded its mindset to include LFG with the late June update, and so far the multiplayer shooter has shot up in popularity because of the system.

“In the first week, instances of players grouping in six-stacks has doubled,” reported Jeff Kaplan. “The awesome part is, six stacks have seen a significant improvement in queue times. But the best part is, none of this has impacted any other group size queue times or solo queue times at all. So it’s been purely a positive in that regard.”

Kaplan promised “changes and improvements” to the looking for group system with Overwatch’s next patch. In the meanwhile, you can see the evidence for yourself about LFG’s popularity after the break.

I want to have a poll to find out how many logged in like me thinking it was a LFG for a COOP vs AI system like in Heroes of the Storm. I queued then immediately quit.. I guess I could have read more than just ‘Overwatch has a new LFG system’. But I’ll be honestly I don’t pay attention to it unless there are Holiday events. Still Stiqman’s comment about how it helps balance the team’s role is a solid benefit for this system.

As someone who doesn’t play Overwatch as yet, I’m still not entirely clear on what makes this Looking For Group tool so popular.

Is there something about how this feature does what it does in Overwatch which makes it such a hit?

Thanks to anyone who feels like chiming in with an answer,

Cheers,

SImilar to WOW’s LFG, it lets you join groups looking for your play class… healer/utility, tank, or damage. So its a clear step up from 6 randoms being put together and 5 of them instantly going DPS and refusing to switch.

Sounds like it’s akin to League of Legends’ old Team Builder or whatever it was called, where basically if you want to play/focus on a certain role now there’s some structured ability to do so.

Isn’t this the new system that somehow allows people who wanna throw the game find each other so real players don’t get thrown into the mix or something like that? Sounds like a good idea. Sort of like an update to Uber that will let you know if it’s being driven by a suicide bomber. Yes poor taste but all I could think up.
