RIFT team under Gamigo admits it’s been ‘reduced’ but is ‘open to expanding’ in the future

Since Trion Worlds was sold to Gamigo back in late October, resulting in sweeping layoffs of the former’s staff, players of Trion’s MMOs have been understandably concerned about the fate that might await their favorite games. To help assuage those fears, the RIFT team put out a(nother) brief post today to update players on the current situation.

“As we mentioned in our previous Team Letter, the gamigo transition has brought up a number of changes in RIFT’s organization. We are still in the process of establishing a variety of new processes and finalizing structural changes to help us streamline things moving forward. We hear your concerns regarding the impact this transition is having on the RIFT development team, so we wanted to discuss those with you all. As many of you are aware, the RIFT development team has been reduced following the recent acquisition. Unfortunately, some familiar faces no longer work with us. For the time being we’re going to move forward with development using the smaller team, but will be open to expanding the team in the future.”

Despite the turbulence that Gamigo’s acquisition of Trion has caused, the team nevertheless assures players that it is “still dedicated to continuing development on RIFT,” promising that the devs are “already hard at work to bring you the Fae Yule content for the end of the year.” There’s no word yet regarding what lies beyond the end of this year for RIFT, but the folks on the dev team say that they “can’t wait to show [players] what the year 2019 has in store,” so hopefully we’ll be hearing more about that soon.

Can’t pretend to have any hopes for Rift at this point. Maybe by some miracle it turns around but playing Rift Prime reminded me why I quit playing Rift proper.

Like maybe at best Rift can keep its niche older F2P MMO status with games like LotRO, Age of Conan, etc… but it just hasn’t aged well at all and current Rift is just too dang money-hungry.

It didn’t improve while Trion was ok-ish. I don’t see it improving now.

Yeah pretty much. As much as it sucks to see what was a good game go down the toilet, Trion screwed it up a long while ago. It can’t really recover without them easing up on the cash shop shenanigans.

Like having a partner, that isn’t really just on you.

I’m thinking Rift will fall into the same catch 22 that W* was in where people won’t spend money because it might shut down, causing it to shut down.

Oh, so they’re really working hard to set that flag to fae_yule = 0 to fae_yule = 1 in the code?

That is probably already scripted into the game … I am sure what they are really talking about is updating the cash shop’s UI with snowflakes.

Yeah i don’t have faith in anything a dev post. Just have to wait and see what happens.

Shut down prime and focus on live servers. Start working on the next expansion. Clean up the store. That’s about it and you have a fairly good MMO going.

Yeah it’s like at the end of the day the reason Chocolate RIFT and early Storm Legion were loved so much was because it was back during a period where the game was strictly P2P with a small handful of optional purchases.

Trion can’t even do that. They had to strip everyone’s account entitlements and then try to resell them in the cash shop for $20 or so apiece for stuff like the Collector’s Edition turtle mount…

They didn’t make Prime anywhere close to being authentic, it felt rather lazy and half-assed to get whales to spend more money and lure folks back in while dangling their $99 for 1 year subscription deal in folks’ faces.

Can’t say things look good given how lackluster support was with the “bigger” team, but good luck to the remaining/new folks. It would be great to somehow see Rift make a nice turnaround, even if it’s a ludicrously longshot chance.
