At tonight’s Game Awards ceremony, Wizards of the Coast announced that it will be expanding the Magic: The Gathering competitive scene with a new esports program that will include “a $10 million prize pool across digital and tabletop Magic.” Part of this new initiative is the establishment of the Magic Pro League (MPL), which “features 32 of the top ranked Magic players from around the world” who will be receiving “play and streaming contracts worth $75,000.”
The highlight of the announcement for digital card-slingers, though, is the introduction of Mythic Championships, which will be taking place both in the real world and in cyberspace on Magic: The Gathering Arena. These tournaments will pit MPL players against “challengers from the Magic community.” MTGA’s esports program will officially commence at PAX East 2019 in Boston, Massachusetts, with an invitational Mythic Championship sporting $1 million in prizes. If you think you’ve got what it takes to square off with the pros at the inaugural Mythic Championship, stay tuned: Wizards will be revealing how players can get a shot at competing “in early 2019.”
