Star Trek Online will let you level with a T6 ship ‘very soon’

Considering how quickly you can level up in Star Trek Online these days (thanks, duty officers!), transferring to new ships every 10 levels has become far more of an annoyance than a delicious carrot to chase. Cryptic must think so too, as the studio is bringing a change “very soon” to allow players to stick with the same Tier 6 ship from the start through the endgame.

There are a couple of caveats with this change that require your attention. First and most obvious, you have to have a Tier 6 ship unlocked to engage in this (and if you don’t have one, you can earn a free T6 by participating in dailies right now). Second, your starship’s power and available slots will be scaled down to your level and only be fully unlocked when you reach the cap.

“Removing level restrictions on so many premium starships allows us to eliminate a barrier that was keeping many players from immediately being able to fly and appreciate the ships they had won or purchased, whether that was from the C-Store, a lockbox, or from the Exchange,” Cryptic said. “And by replacing the standard issue equipment with gear that scales along with you, we are removing some of the further pain points of using these scaling ships as you level up, as any gear you haven’t been able to upgrade with drops or mission rewards, will at least stay level-appropriate.”

FINALLY, ye gods, wooooooooooo

i kinda agree with some ppl who feel some ships were reserved for moar prominent ranks… but that is a FEDeration thing only. it cannot be applied the same to y’know… KDF, RR and the JH factions so……. yeah i don’t think ppl will be overtly pleased if that was incorporated, even to a tiny extent, for the Feddiebums >.>

also, i would love it if they renamed/reordered the level ranks, just for head-canon purposes…

meanwhile, most of the vocal ppl that tend to respond to Cryptic announcements generally fall in the category of:

1) did not read, must kaka all over it
or
2) do not care, gonna kaka all over it

and a (smaller) bunch that is just going:

1) YAY
or
2) good but, i has some issues (which is fine)

yes… i did indeed make the mistake of reading STO’s twitter-post replies
and yes, i regrets it, lots >.<

Your should be able to sell your used ships too

Should just make all ships T6
Or…
Have all the shops level with the character.

I’m sad my future ships are such at T5u… Seeing as they are from the future they should be more powerful than the TYPICAL present day ones

This is fine with me. The last lower level ships they added was with Age of Discovery, with the T1 and the scaling Walker-class that doesn’t get to T6. The question remains what they’re going to do with the lower level paid ships.

You get to endgame so quickly in this game that the lower level ships aren’t really worth it. So I hope they lower those prices, too.

I think they will be still there just for the skins they unlock for other higher ships or the console that comes with them. Last stream I watched they said there are no plans to remove them but there were plans to revise their price

Give us money sooner! Woooo

Pretty much what I get out of this.

It’s not really like that. You’re still going to get free ships as you level and all the free event ships they give out. Or that you can buy with credits or mine dilithium to trade for Zen. Perfect World has a pretty good f2p model. One of the better ones.

It also allows more people (especially long-time players) to use existing ships on any alts they might make, too.

1 – You don’t have to do this. You can go through the upgrades as normal if you want.

2 – They give away so many T6 ships all the time in events, you don’t have to buy any unless it’s a ship you really want. The game is full of free Tier 6 ships people have from events. Now they’re going to be able to use those ships they got free starting at lower level if they want, and not have to change up equipment and slots all the time (if they don’t want to, personally I enjoy changing ships often).

3 – In fact this is stopping you from having to spend as much money. You no longer need to buy as many inventory and ship slot upgrades to hold all this stuff, all the different equipment for ships you’re getting through all the levels and slots to hold the ships if you don’t want to dump them. Those are really the recommended places to spend money at first considering all the free Tier 6 ships they give out, and that need to spend there was just put off by a big amount of time because of doing this.

So what you get out of this is totally wrong.

What is immersion?

What, in this game? Where you can be a starship captain at Lieutenant rank?

That was actually part of the original story. It’s acceptable in Star Fleet lore/tradition (and some naval traditions) for the “Captain” of a ship to not be of the proper officer rank in emergencies (or on training/cadet ships).

When the game launched, it was immediately after the Borg attack that wiped out much of the fleet. Any officer who survived the attack was allowed to remain in command of their ship.

It’s a stretch, but a lot more plausible than the 1000s of Admirals and Generals flying about.

I know it’s a bit of a stretch to begin with, but at least with launch of the game the narrative kinda explained the circumstances and why you were allowed to command an entire ship.

But at this point we’re not even pretending that there are RPG elements to the game – let’s give “endgame” ships to every new player, because why should they go through the motions of progression…

I wish they had kept the level/rank system a little more plausible. And yeah, half the fun has always been getting new ships personally.

Or… taking a T1 NX-01 and leveling to 50 then switching to an NX-01 Refit

I personally love that change. I believe they should had done ships scalling earlier. It becomes more obvious it was needed when you realise that a lot of current T6s too were reskins of older lower tier popular ships

I had an idea for a scaling starship that adds customizable parts. You start with a saucer-based ship like the Miranda and build from there. Eventually you can add a full engineering hull.

The idea of modular ships isnt bad at all but it would probably mean they would have to recode a big chunk of STO from the ground. i also had an idea for carriers to be able to add a 3rd hangar optionally in place of a weapon slot or console but sure it has some limitations there too

I’m not sure I completely agree with this. While tedious certain classes of ship within the Star Trek universe were reserved for the most senior captains.
