The Daily Grind: What’s your ideal event reward for seasonal content?

I'm purely decorative!

I don’t like seasonal events that award pets. I understand why that’s a reward, of course; lots of people like having pets, some games have optional content using your little mini-pets for something else, and it’s an obvious vanity reward. But I don’t really consider “have another thing follow you around like the dozens of other options you already have” to be much of a reward. For that matter, I’m also not fond of seasonal outfits that either can’t be worn out of that event (looking at you, World of Warcraft) or are so thematically linked to that event that it looks weird at any other time.

This is not universal, of course. For some people, the whole appeal of a Christmas event is getting to dress your character up like Santa Claus year-round regardless of how inappropriate it is. And some people just want housing decorations for their abodes in EverQuest II or free mounts or whatever. So what’s your ideal event reward for seasonal content? What do you want to be given when you take part in these limited-time flashes of content?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Pets! Mounts and costumes are great too! Anything that is truly a “gift” and I don’t have to work too hard to get.

I love outfits the best. And mounts! And house decorations! FFXIV tends to do one main event with awesome rewards in at least one of those categories, but then another event will come around and rewards make the event not even worth doing.

I remember ArcheAge had pretty neat events that rewarded mostly housing deco items and lots of buffs. I was surprised they didn’t turn on a Halloween event for AA:U, but I’m hoping we’ll see snow and a Christmas event this year. I don’t know if we’ll get it since Gamingo appears to have largely stepped out of the arena for the moment.

Port clickies are good.

I actually prefer when seasonal content doesn’t have rewards, at all.

Why? Because I really dislike time-limited content, which includes seasonal content. I often stop playing while any kind of seasonal content is ongoing, unless I can either completely turn off that content for me or else if I can later turn it on for me even while out-of-season. And if skipping the seasonal content means I miss a reward that I would otherwise really want, and there’s no way to obtain that reward outside the seasonal content, there’s a chance it can make me stop playing.

Cosmetic items for the actual rewards. Although I hate when they disappear permanently.

I also like when the events include things that help with leveling alts. Like maybe a few daily quests that give a decent chunk of exp. A buff you get can from season NPCs that increases exp gains a bit.

I don’t know if they still do it like this, but I remember using WoW’s Midsummer event to level alts because it had a buff that boosted damage and exp while questing.

Not everyone is interested in a new set of bunny ears, santa claus outfits, or jack’o’lantern heads. So I think a bit of an exp benefit is nice since those people might be interested in leveling alts and it gets them more involved in the events.

Unique cosmetics that don’t return every year, and can be earned through a reasonable amount of gameplay. I hate that so many games do their seasonal events in a way that you need to log in every single day of the event, and run through a checklist of tasks that take several hours, to maybe get the reward you want. Seasonal events should be fun fluff activities, not a chore.

Housing decorations, and unlocks.

If you give me cosmetics that take bagspace, i’ll be pissed.

But really, my least favourite reward in seasonal events, is when they give me lockboxes.

Those games can go fuck themselves.

As long as it doesnt have an effect on the rest of the game, I don’t really care. I don’t usually participate in seasonal events as the content/gameplay of those events just isn’t for me.

The best reward for completing seasonal content would be said seasonal content being deleted from the MMO genre forever.
