Star Citizen showcases the creation of the two brand-new animals coming to alpha 3.23

Land on any planet in Star Citizen currently and you’ll be greeted by things like weather patterns, flora, and very possibly a derelict or two. What you won’t find are any animals, however. That’s going to change with alpha 3.23’s release, as CIG has finally put together two animals to populate certain planets. That’s not quite three, but it’s more than one!

The two creatures in question are the kopion, a dog-like creature, and the marok, which is a sort of pelican pterodactyl thing. Much of the video is focused on the creatures’ visual and sound design, their AI behaviors, and how their addition both makes planets feel more alive and proves that creating fauna is now possible in the MMO.

The video closes with the promise that more creatures, namely the space whale and the space cow, are in active development. Until then, there are at least a predatory land creature and some flying horror birds to scope out in the video package below.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2024, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $650M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
